Lightroom Classic 13.5 drag and drop stops working

Explorer ,
Sep 02, 2024 Sep 02, 2024

In LC 13.5, I am dragging multiple files into Collections.  After dragging for a while (hundreds of photos), I can't drag photos anymore.  Everything else works fine but dragging photos stops working.  Any idea?

Thanks!

First troubleshooting steps:

1. Make sure that you are dragging from the center of the thumbnails, not from the grey borders around them. It's a long-time design misfeature that still trips me up about once a year.

2. Restart your computer.

3. Are you trying to drag into a smart collection or a collection set (a folder of collections)?  You can only drag into regular collections and folders, not smart collections or collection sets.

4. If none of this helps, try resetting LR's preferences:

LR sometimes soils its preferences file, and resetting it can fix all sorts of wonky behavior. That article explains how to restore the old preferences if resetting doesn't help.

Hello

1. Yes I am dragging from the center.  Dragging completely stops working when this happens.

2. Restarting Lightroom Classic fixes it but happens again after drag and dropping a lot of files again.  This is completely "reproducible."

3. I am dragging into Collections.  Like I said, it works then stops working.

4. I will try this.

Thanks.

Hi

I'm having excatly the same issue. Did you already found a solution?

If not, what hardware do you use (just to compare, in case it is related to a specific componend)? Do you use an external drive (for the catalog as storage location)?

Hi
I have the same issue.  It happens when dragging to folders or collections.  It's fine when I first start Lrc but eventually the drag and drop facility stops working.  Exiting and restarting works but the same issue reoccurs.
It's not related to a specific catalog as I have several and it happens with all of them.
I use an internal SSD (Samsung EVO) for my catalog location, the image files are on an external WD Red 4TB Drive.
I use a Windows 10 PC with Intel i7-6800K, 32GB RAM, GTX 1080.
For me, this is something that has happened ever since LR version 1.0.

Just to add to my previous post.  This is something that I can reproduce consistently.
I'm currently sorting through 100k images, of which there are several duplicates.  In order to find those duplicates I am dragging photos around as it is easiest for me to spot them this way.  The files have lost their metadata because 55k were recovered from a failed HDD so a sort by Capture Time won't work.  This is purely visual.  LrC works for around 10-15 minutes, then the drag and drop fails to work.  I have tried selecting/deselecting the sort options, changing them.  Switching folder/collection.  Up to now, the only reliable method is to exit and restart.

LATEST

And this is still happening with the very latest build of Lightroom Classic 14.3.  The problem seems to have gotten worse if anything.  I have taken off various other applications that work on top of Windows, Directory Opus, Media Monkey and none of them produce a demonstrable improvement.
Is this something that the developers are aware of, care about.  I do sometimes wonder why I'm paying £60/m for these programs.
