Installed LR this weekend. Bad move. It has been hell. Why doest it keep crashing for the first time EVER? Why do my edits keep disappearing and doing very strange things? Why are my files renaming themselves? Why can I not contact a real live person? Is this the best customer service? Really very unimpressed Lightroom.

Not sure if this is a rant (go ahead) or if you want to troubleshoot these issues and fix them.
To troubleshoot, can you give us some specifics starting with your operating system?
Why do my edits keep disappearing and doing very strange things?
Can you be specific? What sort of strange things? Is this random or does it occur every time you perform a set of steps?
Why are my files renaming themselves?
Can you give us some specific steps so we can see this behaviour for ourselves?

Yes it is a rant. I don't have time for this. It was working fine up until the upgrade now its gone belly up.
I'm operating on a Mac desktop.
Files that I imported last night disappeared after the very last LR classic crash late last night. I had to relink files this morning to the original folders as they had disappeared and could not be found in LR . ( I store my files on my external hard drive which I work off. But I’m guessing that LR doesn’t like this because you want me to BUY CLOUD SPACE so you are making my hard drive defunct. Right?) Anyway then once I found the LR work that I did last night all the edits were crazy. Like the wrong edits were linked to the wrong file. I really don't know how to explain this but its just crazy.
I'm no techie, but I'm guessing my best option is to uninstall and reinstall LR Classic so I can start they circus again.

Something else must be in play here because the new Lightroom Classic doesn't work any differently than the old Lightroom CC 2015. At least it doesn't work any differently on my Windows 10 computer. It still treats all my hard drives that same, all my folders the same, my catalogs are the same as they were before and after they were updated to the new format. So there is something else happening here that you're not seeing or not telling us about. All the cloud storage you are talking about has to do with the new Lightroom CC, NOT Lightroom Classic.

I’m so delighted that it’s all the same for you. Congratulations. Well it’s not the same for me, and there is nothing that I’m “not telling (you) about”. This is my experience with the issues since I installed that shocker of an update on the weekend.
Missing folders and glitchy files and edits aside, why is Lightroom Classic crashing? I can see from other forums that I am not the only one with this issue and can you please be a little helpful and suggest how I can go about fixing it so at least it does not crash all the time.

Which operating system are you using?
OS X Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra or High Sierra?

Nope. They're perfectly happy to have you use Classic, because otherwise all the development effort increasing performance and adding features would be pointless.
And no, you're definitely not the only one with the issue.
How big is the LR6 version of the catalog file?

Hi Sean
My LR catalog is 526 MB.
Does this affect it? I honesly have little clue how these things operate. I just use the stuff! Up until this weekend its been fairly painless. However these was an update a few years back that trashed all my file paths, and I had to start over. Not sure if it was a LR issue, Mac issue, or a combination of the two. Since then I have been VERY wary of updates and normally held off updating too quickly. I forgot the pain of the last bad update experience and went ahead with the LR Classic update this weekend. Bad move! I really should have waited!
Thanks!

No, it's not particularly big. If you zip it up to make it smaller, and dropbox it to me, I'll see if I get the crashing too. I might also be able to try a restore on the catalog. Send me the link via PM. There won't be any images, so no need to worry there, I won't actually be viewing anything.

Hi John, I have specific issues with the new LR Classic CC. I am using an almost new Dell bought specifically for photo editing btw.
First noise reduction doesn't show as applied in Fit Screen but does show if I zoom in one to one. I can manage that as when I tried exporting to see if NR had applied - it had.
But yesterday out of the blue the brush editing spots have just disappeared. I was working on an image using the brush and suddenly the screen went black. I waited and then closed LRC CC and re opened. I immediately noticed that the option for editing previously applied brushes had disappeared. I have since looked at various images where I had used the brush and the little spots on the image that allow you to go back in and edit don't appear.

That has always been the case (I have used LR since Version 2.0 in 2008), with the exception of some camera models and/or ISOs that Adobe considered likely to be strongly noisy. Moreover, Adobe strongly recommends setting both Sharpening and Noise Reduction with the display zoomed to 1:1.

Have you tried pressing the H (for "hide") key?

Thanks Elie_di
They were particularly noisy sky images so that probably explains that and I felt a bit of a fool when I realised the brush show edit pins had reverted to show - never - so that's sorted too.
Appreciate your response, thanks

I'm finding the same problems. I just updated three days ago: updated my main catalogue which opened the first time, but has frozen ever since every time I launch LR Classic CC.
I'm running OSX Sierra 10.12.6 on an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014).
My previous Lightroom CC 2015 catalogue size was 905.6MB, and the updated Classic one is 730 MB. Very frustrating! LR Classic just freezes at the opening screen, showing "Reading preferences..."
About to force quit again and go back to the old (previous) LR. Is this a case of Adobe releasing the update too soon?

No, just a problem that's in your preferences.
Keep these three keys held down - Alt/Opt Cmd Shift - while you click the "Classic" icon in the dock. You should then see a dialog box that allows you to clear the existing preferences and open your catalogue.

Thanks very much John. That worked... seems to be working smoothly now.
Much appreciated!

I have had no end of problems with the new Lightroom classic CC. I f I try to open it up I get the bouncing icon and no further. If after several attempts I get it opened, usually by completely restarting my iMac, it then won't close down completely. It has caused my computer to crash several times. I am at my wits end because I can no longer rely on Lightroom. Have reinstalled Lightroom again several times, having used Clean my Mac to uninstall it. I have also reinstalled Creative cloud desktop app as that freezes. What on earth is going on?!?@
