Lightroom Classic not sorting

Community Beginner ,
Dec 22, 2018 Dec 22, 2018

I've noticed recently some if my images are not being stacked together by capture date when sorting by capture date is selected.  I have "Stack with original" selected in preferences.  Note how image # 228 (edited barn) is not sorted next to the raw image (#192) even though they were taken at the same time, date.  What am I doing wrong?  I the sort filter, I'm sorting by red & green images (red are my raw & green are my final versions).  lightroom not sorting.png

I notice in your screen shot you do not show the Sort: area of the screen. So it is only your word that you have the Sort Set to Capture Time. Not to doubt your word but you show all other aspects and not the one thing you are asking about.

Please post another screen shot showing everything.

image 262.pngSorry it wasn't in view.  Here's another screenshot.  Since my last post, I manually moved 2 of the edited barn shots next to their raw image.  They stayed together when I changed sorting to other choices & returned to Sort by Capture Time.  However, look at image # 154 & 262.  One is raw, the other is the edited raw.  Both have identical names & capture time on metadata but not sorting together when I choose Sort by Capture Time.  What would make them not stay together unless you manually move them together.  Other raws & finals in this folder are stacked together.  image 154.pngpreferences.pnglightroom not sorting.png

First off, apparently in grid view (view options) you have show badges off, as such the indicator that images are stacked is not showing.

Either that our you did not stack them or they got removed from a stack.

Now, in that last screenshot, the folder you are in, are their any sub folders under it? And if so, apparently you have show sub folders on. If not, then this sentence is useless. Are you sure they are stacked, if you collapse all stacks what happens?

(this next part edited, as I defiantly blew it before)  So you are renaming files based on date, a location, and I do not know what. But do they properly line up if you sort on file name? Also, your workflow, so none of mine, but would not it work better to use YYYYMMDD_hhmmss as the file name syntax. Location could be kept in the keywords to use for other sorting or filtering

Please share a screenshot of your file naming template. Below is one of mine as an example, not to say in your workflow to use this one, just to use a picture as to help describe the tool I am curious to see:

Note how image # 228 (edited barn) is not sorted next to the raw image (#192) even though they were taken at the same time, date.

The first step in troubleshooting this is to determine that the two photos indeed have the same capture date. The easiest way to do that is to do View > View Options > Grid View and add Capture Date/Time to either Compact Cell Extras or Expanded Cell Extras. This will show the capture date/time under the thumbnails. Then post the screenshot again showing the out-of-order thumbnails while Sort: Capture Date is set.

Yes, they’re definitely taken at the exact same date & time down to the

second. I’ve just been manually moving them next to each other & seems to

stick. Will try reinstalling tomorrow.

LATEST

Yes, they’re definitely taken at the exact same date & time down to the second.

But that doesn't mean that LR has read the capture date correctly.  There are several sorting bugs, including the one mentioned by Jao, that are caused by LR not correctly reading the capture date. So posting a screen capture showing the capture dates under the thumbnails is the first step.   Depending on what that shows, there are a couple of next steps in troubleshooting those bugs.

What version of Lightroom. There was a pernicious sorting bug that got fixed not too long ago that would result in seemingly random locations of edited images and images that came through mobile Lightroom. I haven't seen this in a while since it was fixed.

It’s the latest version. Will uninstall & reinstall tomorrow & see if that

fixes it.

Which version (check system info in the help menu)? Oftentimes people say they have the latest but are actually several versions behind. The update system for Lightroom through the creative cloud app is very flaky and often doesn't notice that updates are available
