Lightroom Classing 14.xx crashing too frequently

New Here ,
Apr 18, 2025 Apr 18, 2025

So in the last few months Lightroom has been crashing increasingly frequently on my Windows 11 system. I have tried everything that I could think of including reinstalling, cleaning up graphics drivers and reinstalling, moving cataolog to different disk, creating new catalogues, disabling GPU in Lightroom, Resetting Lightroom settings, but nothing worked.

Initially things started with LR crashing when importing relatively large number of images (from few hundred to few thousands) but lately they have very frequent, like crashing every few minutes.

The crashes happens

1. When lightroom has to build a number of thumbnails and previews. This is related to imports (though I have turned off preview generation) when thumbnails for imported images are generated, it also happnes when I navigate to a collection (smart or regular) where LR has to generate thumbnails from many folders on the disk.

2. Doing heavy edits.

3. Strangely even if I am doing nothing and Lightroom is just open with few hundred or thousand thumbnails in the selected folder/collection. it will quitely crash after several minutes of half hour or so.

Apparently there are two kind of crashes. One is where LR queitly crashes due to some software reason. The second is when multiple crashes cause an error in catalog and LR crashes due to that issue (it displays the message to that effect).

I have submitted crash reports whenever I had the option to do that. I saved system info in a file. It can be downloaded here.

System Info

Any help will be appreciated.

When I try to open your system info in DropBox, it doesn't open. Please just paste the system info into your reply, as text. We need the info down to and including the Plug-in information. We don't want and don't need and absolutely hate the information after Plug-ins.

You have talked consistently about LR, but this is the Lightroom Classic forum. Do you really have Lightroom Classic? If so, for clarity, please refer to your software as Lightroom Classic or LrC, and do not refer to your software as Lightroom nor as LR.

I have a couple of thoughts:

And a question: is it just LrC that crashes, or does the entire computer crash and have to be re-started?

Did both (diable plug-in and clear cache) but the problem persists.

When it crashes, it is only LrC that crashes. System remains stable.

In your first post, you said "Resetting Lightroom settings". What exactly are the steps here? Do you mean reset the Lightroom Classic preference file?

Yes. Launched lightroom holding shift-alt and then reset on the dialog box that came up.

Hi @indusphoto

Apologies for the delayed response, and I’m sorry to hear that the steps shared earlier didn’t resolve the issue. I understand how frustrating this must be. Hopefully, the problem has been resolved by now — but if you're still experiencing crashes or freezes, I recommend trying the additional troubleshooting steps outlined here: Troubleshoot Lightroom Classic crash or freeze

Please let me know how it goes or if you need any further help!

Regards,

Srishti

It is an internal SATA SSD. My main drive is internal NVME where my catalog is located but when I started having these problems, I moved it to this drive just to rule out any issues with the original drive.

I should add one thing that may help narrow down the problem. Usually the problem starts with importing relatively large number of images (few hundred or more). Lightroom crashes during the import almost always. It does not matter if I am doing copy&import from flash memory or using Add/Import in place on a local disk. Once I get a crash, Lightroom will continue to crash in subsequent launches. In most cases it will analyze catalog before restarting but it will still crash after restarting. Eventually it will stabilize in the sense that it wont crash right after starting.

The other kind of crash is when applying masking edits to the images (no AI, but I do use subject/sky/people detection masking), if I spend enough time in masking edits LR will crash. However this would usually be a one time crash and wont cause LR to go in crash cycle.

14.4 crashes every single time on me with "Add Mask", doesn't matter if GPU is enabled or not, or what photo it is, how much disk space is available. It's just unusable.
