Since upgrading to Lightroom 14.0.1, I have a bunch of files that LR is giving me this error message "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo". It is occurring on random (but several) files. I can see them correctly when I open them using Nikon software, so I know the files themselves are not corrupt. But I can't open them (RAW files) in LR or PS. Please help. I have the files backed up on alternative EHD but I am seeing the same error on the same files. Thanks in advance
The file is corrupted, that's what causes this message.
Inside the RAW file, there is a JPG preview file which is often uncorrupted even when the RAW part is corrupted. That's why other software opens it properly, the other software is displaying the JPG preview. Restore a copy of your photo from its backups.
Corrupted files are caused by malfunctioning hardware somewhere, often card reader or camera card. Please try to diagnose where the corruption is coming from. Use a different card and a dif

Can you share one of those files, perhaps to DropBox.

The files themselves are perfectly fine. I can open them in other programs. It is an Aodbe or Lightroom/PS issue.

Thankyou DJ_paige. I have restored the files as recommended. I will now go ahead and try to work out the issue. Might be a biiger task.
Thanks

Have you solved this problem?
I am having this since two days, after upgrading to 14.5
It happens on 21 photos out of 29.000.
I can still edit the photos and export them.
I tried restoring the 21 problematic photos from two different backups, to no avail.

Hi Giovanni,
I have not yet solved this problem.

Gosh!
Are you able like me to still edit the problematic files?

I believe the answer marked correct is not correct. I have encountered this problem a few times. If I go to Explorer and duplicate the RAW file, LrC has no problem editing it. If I sequencially sync the edits to the duplicated file, it works fine, until I sync the masks. Then I find that sometimes it is OK until I sync the second mask. The RAW file is fine. There is a bug in LrC.
In addition, I have encountered this problem when I have created a virtual copy. After editing the virtual copy it will generate this error. The other version built on the same RAW file is still fine.
It does not seem to be possible to backup in the edit stream and recover. Once it goes into this state I have not found a way to recover, except to start a new edit stream and copy all the edits except for the masks. It is not clear to me what mask operations are triggering the error.

I've been getting a similar problem, Just now I edited three files. Two of them had this issue. I had done very little editing in v14.5. looking in more detail, I think I have narrowed this down to having used the curve feature with the brush. I experimented with two further files. The brush alone was fine. The brush with the cuve caused the issueagain. Adobe, please fix this.

Please submit a proper bug report, following these instructions: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-how-do-i-write-a-bug-report/idi-p/12386373.
Also, it is not correct to say you have a "similar" problem as the thread is about problems reading a photo. In the future you would want to start a new thread with your problem.

Using the curve feature with a brush is in no way the same problem that started this thread. And yes, the original problem was a corrupted file.

Yea, I've been getting this a lot, lately. I edit in ACR, but catalog in LR. It's sporadic and I have no trouble opening the images and editing them again in ACR.

Same here since the last update (14.5.1) I shoot in both RAW and JPG on my Canon R5, but generally only work with the JPG files. I work in LR several hours a day most days. As I'm going thru culling and editing I will see the "!" icon appear on images at random as I expand stacks. The icon(s) will eventually disappear as I'm working and the image will edit normally if I haven't reached it before it disappears. Otherwise, I have to skip until it goes away. The latter scenario has happened a few times today already and becoming very annoying. This behavior seems more software than hardware related.

Has happened a couple times since posting. Something I've just now noticed ... it's only one or two images at a time. When the icon jumps to a different image ... it releases from the previous image(s).

Just an update, for me, I get this if I use a few masks when editing in ACR. LR will show the ! warning and not provide a current thumbnail. It's like LR can't Identify the editing. No issue with corrupt files. I can save Metadata changes in LR, and my image edits will be the same in ACR
