Lock Import Folder

Community Beginner ,
Feb 20, 2019 Feb 20, 2019

Is there a way to lock the import folder to a specific location?

If there is an SD card inserted in the computer, Lightroom seems to always default to it.

That would be great, but on a Microsoft Surface, I keep a an expansion storage card in the built in SD card slot, and every time have to redirect the import source folder to a different location.

Solutions would be to either use remember the last folder used every time, or to be able to specify a location that stays the same forever.

Thanks

Not sure it would work but how about creating a Preset with the only option the Source location you want to use. Then when you click the Import button you then select that preset first.

In theory it should work, but Lightroom presets are as stable as a two-legged stool. The OP has already mentioned cards in SD slot overriding presets and mobile devices will often do likewise.

A possible alternative would be to use the Auto Import feature. However, any photos imported via that route will need to be moved to the desired location after the import is complete.

I have tried the Presets, and as near as I can tell, Lightroom still defaults to an SD card if one is inserted

I will try Auto Import as a possible work around, but since I keep all photos in folder named with the date and description, I don't think that's going to work, although it might cut down on the effort to re-direct the import source.

My hope was that I was missing something about being able to control the source or have it remember the previous source without defaulting down the permanent SD card every time

Thanks both of you for your help.

Then a Import Preset has no control over the Source location.

Do you know that the drop-down menu [Select a Source :] shows 'Recent' source folders.

If you commonly use one special folder it is sure to be there to select with two clicks.

This is helpful, and a lot faster than starting all the way over at the C:\ level

Doesn't make much sense though that having an SD card destroys the import path.

On my old computer, it didn't have an SD card, and always showed the last import folder, which was available as a single click

Thanks very much

Sure it does, makes perfect sense. I have 2 drives in my notebook and 4 drives in my desktop. If I insert a SD card into either system I want LR to go there first for importing images. Having it remember and stay at any other import source would be counter productive.

Just because your surface doesn't have a larger internal drive and you need to have a SD card in the slot all the time for storage reason doesn't meant that everyone would do that and that the normal behavior of LR should be changed.
