Lr Classic won't import photos

I subscribed to LR Classic and photoshop a couple of months ago and all has worked well until today. I suddenly can't import from a card reader.  It tells me that LR is not responding and sits there with an almost blank screen (one little empty box on left side).  I have restarted pc but no change.

When LR starts up it shows me the first screen (the whale image) then loads a few bits and then shows me the whale again.  Is it trying to load twice and getting confused?  I was previously running LR5.7 and use Windows 10.

Any suggestions please? Many thanks.

First up, did a lock file get left behind. Commonly caused by an abnormal close (crash) /

Second up, did you have a card in the card reader when starting lightroom, does removing that card before starting lightroom help?

And if no card did not help, does unplugging the card reader (assuming external) help?

Thanks so much for this help David.  I have unplugged the card reader and removed the card and immediately there were some import choices showing (C: and D:). Then I plugged the card reader back in and it found that as well.  Fantastic!!

I don't understand why this should be so but I don't need to!! I am still puzzled though by the way it appears to try to load twice -ie the two whale photos.  Still, not to worry, you have solved my problem.  Many thanks for quick thorough reply.
