LRC-edited photos disappeared after update

HELP PLEASE:    I use an external hard disc to store my photos.  I label and date them and create files:  RAW, CULLED, LR-CATALOG AND FULL GALLERY.

I have the RAW, and CULLED Photos on the hard drive.  I just finished editing 800 photos in LRC but before I transferred them I noticed an update for LRC, so I quit LRC and did the update.  When I went back into LRC to transfer my photos it says on all of the photos that "original file cannot be found".  I. have tried many things and so far have had no luck at finding my edited photos.  I am so upset and cannot imagine having to redo all the edits on 800 photos again.

Thank you for your thoughts or suggestions.

Edits are stored in the catalog, not in the image. So if the catalog shows the images, then the edits should still be there too. Lightroom can't show them as long as it can't locate the images, however. Most likely this is a permission problem. Check that Lightroom Classic still has full disk access:

Hi Johan

Thanks for your response.  One of the things I did was make sure that LRC, LR, PS had full access and it did so that did't seem to be the issue.

Are there exclamation point icons on the photos as shown in Figure 2 here? If so, please follow the instructions given there.

Hi and yes there were.  I did a lot of things and not sure what it was but I did find my edited photos and just a bit ago copied and transferred them to my external hard drive.

Thanks for your response,
