When I import new photos LrC now builds Standard previews instead of Smart Previews. I don't know why this started happening a few imports ago. I would like to go back to the way it was.

Check that you've checked the 'Build smart previews' box in the Import module (see atatched screenshot for location). If the box is checked, then your LrC preferences may be corrupt. You can reset these by following the steps set out in Method 1 at https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/setting-preferences-lightroom.html

Thanks for your reply Ian. I did check and Build Smart Previews is checked. What started this was a few imports ago I received a message saying that smart previews would not be built. This was half way through the import. Ever since then I notice that as the imports load-I usually import about a thousand 45 MP images from my Z9 card, that I see that LrC is only building standard previews with no mention of Smart Previews. So I assume that they are not getting built. I don't know how to check If someone does please advise, I would appreciate it.

Standard previews and Smart previews are two entirely different things. Lightroom always needs to have some kind of normal preview, because that is what you look at in the grid and in any other module. Smart previews are not previews at all. That name is misleading. Smart previews are proxies for your original images, so you can edit images even when the originals are offline. That means Lightroom cannot build standard previews instead of smart previews. It can build standard previews and smart previews, or only standard previews.

Thanks for your reply Johhan. I agree with you up to your last two sentences or maybe I don't understand. I was aware of the purpose of Smart Previews and not aware of standard previews.
