When I open the Map tab in Lightroom , I get a grey map of the world with the message "Map is offline". A number of posts say that I should update to the latest version of LR. When I go to the menu option, it says that I have the latest version. I don't subscribe to Creative Cloud, I bought the non-subscription version from my local retailer. Is there an update or a patch that I don't know about?

You are running the latest version of Lightroom 5. There is a new version, LR 6/CC, but it is not an Update it is an Upgrade and cost money, either a one time charge, $79 US, or through a CC subscription to the Photography plan.
The map module uses Google Maps which needs an active internet connection. So there may be a problem with your computers ability to connect to Google Maps.

Google has changed the API for Maps, which changed the way many programs access Maps and has resulted in the flashing "Maps Offline". This was corrected in the latest version of Lightroom 6.12 / 2015.12. You must upgrade from Lightroom 5.7.1 to resolve this problem.

just "upgraded" to LR6 this morning to resolve same issue; iMac running latest and Google maps runs fine outside LR but the upgrade hasn't given me full map functionality; shows the map and badges fine but zooming or otherwise moving the map annoyingly causes the same old "Map Is Offline" message while it finds its place in the world; NOT WORTH UPGRADING JUST TO RECOVER MAPS FUNCTIONALITY in my opinion; good luck

Check that your upgrade has got you to version LRCC2015.12 (which is where the fix was applied). Do Help>System Info to check the version number.

thanks for the tip; shows I'm on "6.0 [1014445]" so I should be good

No, you are not good. Latest version is 6.12. You have the base version of LR 6 (6.0). You need to download and install the 6.12 update patch.

As the big jolly man says "you are correct sir!" Now I'm good to go. Confirmed.

It is a shame, if you pay that much for lightroom and it stops working correctly. Adobe is expansive and bad in Support.

Has Adobe officially discontinued support for 5.7.1 or is there some hope that they will produce a patch for those of us who prefer this version?

Never mind, I found the statement elsewhere on the Adobe site that v.5 is no longer supported.
