Some of Color Labeles Are Gone (LRC)

Hi,

I'm experiencing the same issue described in this thread:

Some of the color labels of the photos in some of my Lightroom folders are gone.

I tried to open a new catalog and import the old one, but it didn't work.

The Lightroom classic release is 12.3 (even though on the creative cloud it says the version is 12.4... strange).

This is very important for me, can you please help me solve the issue??

First of all, the thread you linked to is for Premiere Pro, which has nothing to do with  LrC.

If you go to Help > About Lightroom Classic (might be in the Ligthroom menu on a Mac), what version number does it say?

And where does it say that you have version 12.4? Is it in the Creative Cloud desktop app?

1. I'm not familiar with Premiere Pro, but the whole discussion is about Lightroom, as well as it's solution.

2. As said the Lightroom classic release is 12.3, and in the Creative Cloud desktop app it says 12.4

I dont' know why LrC and the desktop app are reporting different version numbers.

But you could try to uninstall, and then reinstall, might fix the issue.

If you choose not to keep preferences when uninstalling, this might fix the color label issue, which could be caused by corrupted preferences.

You can also delete the preferences without uninstalling.  Go to Lightroom > Preferences > General.

Press the Option key, and a button for resetting the preferences will appear.

You reference a discussion about Premiere, but your symptoms are in LrC? Could you please describe the problem in its entirety without reference to a discussion about Premiere? Please show us screen captures of the problem; use the "Insert Photos" icon to include screen captures in your reply.

Yes, I reference a discussion about Premiere, but it happens to me on LrC. this is the exact same issue- the color label for pictures I was labeling FOR SURE, were gone, and I don't know why... not it just looks like a picture was not labeled, but it was for sure.

If you go to "All Photographs" and then search for the photo by using the Filter Bar to find all photos with a specific color, can you find it that way?

Perhaps ... accidentally ... could it be that you have more than one catalog, and the color label was assigned in catalog 1 and now you are looking in catalog 2?

Try opening a recent backup of your catalog file (maybe even several recent backups) and see if the color labels appear.

Disappearing color labels are usually caused by changing the Label Set in 'Metadata - Color Label Set'. The explanation is as follows. Although you see a color label, that is not how Lightroom stores it. Lightroom stores a label as a text in a special metadata field. The default text is the name of the color, so a red color label is stored as the word 'Red' in the label field. You can change this in the Color Label Set however, so a red label is now perhaps "Not yet finished' or anything else. If a custom color label set gets changed to the defaul set, then the text field (that still contains 'Not yet finished' for red labels) no longer matches the labels in the set, and so the labels on the images disappear. AFAIK, Lightroom comes with two default sets; 'Lightroom Default' and 'Bridge default', so even if you never created a custom label set yourself, you could still lose your labels by switching between these two default sets.

@JohanElzenga  Above will result in white labels. Unfortunately, the OP hasn't actually defined what 'Some of Color Labeles Are Gone' means. Does the OP mean the labels are completely gone or that they've changed to white.

@Ian Lyons Correct. I assume that he did not really noticed the difference between white labels and no labels, because white labels do not color the slide mount like color labels do. They only show as a small white rectangle.

Hi, the color labels were: Red / yellow/green/blue/purple / none (is that what you mean by white). Usually, I would label it in Red / yellow / blue.

Now it is all NONE.

Oh, just now I got it. You were right, I was on 'Lightroom Default and when I switched to 'Bridge Default' I can find the missing label.  Do you know how can I unify the two (Lightroom Default &Bridge Default)?

If you see a white tile where you previously had a coloured label, then you have customised the label. I've included screesnhots below that hopefully explain.

I have never used customized labels, but now I see some of the labels can be seen under "Bridge Default" and some under "Lightroom Default". Can I unify them? to be all presented at once?
