Multiple Issues with LR CCC "Upgrade"

New Here ,
Dec 02, 2017 Dec 02, 2017

By way of background, I've been using LIghtroom for about 6 years, and consider myself a near expert user of the product.  I have ~ 75,000 photos in the Catalog. I have only had minor crashes in the past. All of this started as soon as the "Classic" option appeared.

1) Major problem: LR CCC borked my dedicated photo drive. After multiple LR crashes when trying to Import new photos (and several system crashes to BSOD, see below), my dedicated 2TB driver would not accept any new file writes. It can be read, but won't write new files, even when using Explorer.  And I had to do multiple reboots and rescans/fixes to make the drive readable again.I had to copy the files to a new drive and point the Catalog to that drive. (I keep my Catalog on a different drive). So far, that's working, and I was able to import. So this $10/mo subscription just cost me another $100. Lightroom is the only program that writes to that drive (or causes Explorer to write to it).

2) Major annoyance: When I select a photo in the main workspace grid in the Library it does not register in the filmstrip, so when I hit Develop it goes to either the last photo I selected in the filmstrip, or, if none previously selected, loads the first photo in my Library to develop.  So if I want to Develop a photo I have to find the photo in that tiny filmstrip. Does the same thing whether I am in All Photographs or Previous Import.

3) Major annoyance: when starting LR CCC, I get an error messages that presents a dialog box stating that an error in reading the last state of the Catalog has occurred, and that it will be fixed on the next LR start.  When clicked, LR vanishes. Gone. Terminated.  I then restart the program and get a little further before something else happens.

4) Major problem: Computer has crashed 4 times while I was working in LR CCC. The dreaded Blue Screen of Death, which I have not seen since switching to Win10, It appears to be blaming a BKCD thread (I believe that's what it said... I did not write it down because I was busy throwing furniture around the room).

I shot a wedding this past weekend and I've managed to edit less than a dozen photos so far because of these problems..  Something tells me this is just the tip of the iceberg.

All I can tell you is that any hardware guru will tell you that Blue Screen of Death is caused either by a bad video driver (re-install the latest version of the driver) or it is caused by a hardware malfunction; it cannot be caused by bad software. I suspect that fixing this will make (some of) the other problems better.

I had no BSOD issues before this upgrade, which rules out a video driver issue.

It could be that Classic pushes your hardware hard enough to uncover a weakness, and the previous version did not. Paige is right: BSODs are never caused by software. They are always, always a result of hardware problems or bad drivers.

The next time you get a BSOD, find a program on the web that will interpret it for you. That will help a lot more than throwing your furniture around.

1) How old was that original 2TB drive? More than likely it was the drive that failed.

Did the OS do any recent updates? If it did MS is becoming like Apple when the OS gets updated. It doesn't respect the permissions you have assigned to drives and changes them "For Your Protection" or so MS thinks.

As for the BSODs that is a hardware failure and can be caused by a faulty external drive.

2) Yes this has been reported by others. Do a search for that problem on this forum and the other LR forum.

Lightroom Classic CC | Photoshop Family Customer Community

3) All of that leads to hardware problems. On what drive is your catalog? LR is having a hard time writing and reading the catalog.

4) Again this is saying you have some type of hard ware problem. Exactly what type of computer are you using, the age of the computer and when was the last time you cleaned the dust out of it?

1) Drive has not failed. It is readable. I can now use Windows Explorer to write to it, after numerous reboots and fixes, but I won't try to write to it using LR CCC again.  Hard Drive Sentinel reports it is at 100% (Excellent) condition.

2) Only a few of those come close to what I'm experiencing, and none of those have been solved, either.  Other searches on "Teh Intrawebs" reveals other major unsolved problems.

3) Catalog is on my main C: drive. The photos are stored on a different internal drive (backed up to a second internal drive AND to an external drive for triple redundancy). Hard Drive Sentinel reports it is at 100% (Excellent) condition.

4) All diagnostics, including stress testing, do not point to a hardware problem.  I have 16GB of RAM, running on a Phenom II at 2700 MHz and have no problems with PShop or with LR before this forced upgrade.
