My catalog size is out of control despite optimization and discarded previews

My catalog contains 67879 images, large, but not super large. I optimize and have 1:1 previews discarded after one week.  Total size 44 gb, smart previews 36 gb.

I see lots of discussion about people complaining about 4gb catalog size, but mine is 20 times larger. Lightroom is not speedy, but functions normally.

Does anyone have a catalog this size? Other than splitting it up (which I don't want to do), any suggestions would be welcome.

You have misunderstood. People are referring to the catalog file itself and that is usually under 4GB. They are not referring to the previews.

Your catalog FILE is not 80gb, the total of your previews and smart previews are 80gb. Most likely, the catalog file itself is well under 4GB.

Yes. I see that you are correct. Thanks. I only cared, since I wanted to move the catalog onto an SSD, and I thought that I should try to fix my "problem" before I did this. It looks like I don't have a problem.
