My Lightroom 5.7 will not import at all. It freezes the entire computer so I have to manually crash it and nothing stops it.

Suddenly every time I try to import photos in lightroom 5.7 it will freeze the entire obscenely expensive laptop so that I have no other option but to manually crash it with the power button. I have read every forum I could and no one has given an actual answer. Nothing works and nothing has even changed. It worked one day and didn't the very next without anything changing or any updates. I have been using it on windows 10 for 2 years without a single problem and I tried going all the way back to windows 7 compatibility and that does nothing either.

I have tried everything in other forums suggested, at least the suggestions I have found, and nothing has done a single thing. Also not a single post I read was marked at solved. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get this thing to work?

Thank you

Are you trying to import directly from camera or camera memory? If so, first thing to try is copying image files to your computer directly and try importing from there. If that works, it tells you Lightroom's ok, the problem is something else.

My next suggestion is to see if somehow files are corrupted. Make a copy of one already imported (raw?) file and see if that imports again. I suspect if it doesn't, a LR reinstall might be the next option unless others have ideas.

I don't think all the files are corrupt. I can't actually get to the importing process to bring into develop. I hit import photos and videos and then desktop, but it can not actually load anything more like the first couple before the whole things freezes up and becomes a doorstop. As in no ctrl +alt+ delete or escape or anything will shake it. Even the clock stops. So I can't even select a photo(s) to hit import.  But before I go to import photos and videos the program seems happy enough, I can fiddle with other things, settings, preferences, etc. The second I try to import from the desktop to select images, its only a matter of seconds before it happens. This all started literally overnight too, so I don't know what could have disrupted it or what it needs to function again.

Oh, no. I do have an android, but I have never attached it in any way to any adobe program. Nor do I have lightroom mobile. I always go basically the low tech path within the high tech.  I keep things pretty simple, which makes it more confusing on what the problem could possibly be.

No, no iphone or anything else tethered in any way. I also tried disabling the plug-in manager as someone on another post suggested worked for their similar issue even though I don't use them so it would be odd for it to be the culprit, but that didn't help either.

I am uncertain if you have tried these-  (I have had to use both in the past with BSOD  LR5 and Win-8 if I recall)

1. Backup the Catalog, then do a complete Adobe program clean using the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner.

I know you are on 5.7 'perpetual', but the cleaner will still do its work, then do a fresh install of LR.

Download link is in this page-

Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems

2. Do a complete uninstall of video drivers after disabling in Device Manager, and then re-install from the graphics card maker.

Regards. My System: Lightroom-Classic 14.0, Photoshop 26.0, ACR 17.0, Lightroom 8.0, Lr-iOS 9.0.1, Bridge 15.0.0, Windows-11.

I'd proceed with the following, trying to avoid a reinstall:

first make sure graphics processing is off. then try starting a new catalog. see if that works. (might be a good time to make sure you have your lrcat backed up, too.)

if that doesnt work, reset preferences and start with a fresh catalog. and see if that works (again make sure you have a copy of your catalog saved outside Lightroom). You'll have to search for instructions on locating preferences file which you must delete in LR5.

if that doesnt work, all I can suggest is trying a complete reinstall.

it does occur to me that perhaps some disk/file issue could cause your problem too, so perhaps running a disk check first would be in order.

Sorry, that's all I got!

Thank you, I can't seem to find where to turn off graphics in lightroom 5.7 though. Everything online shows 6 and up because that's when it started using graphics cards. If I go to preferences there is no preferences tab or anything about graphics. Would it be under something else in 5.7 or is it completely void of that since it was not supposed to use it then?

There is no such thing as "turning off graphics" in Lightroom 5.7. Use of GPU acceleration did not exist in the version. It was first introduced in LR 6.
