P: Generative Remove Feedback (Lr Classic & Lr Eco)

This post applies to Lightroom Classic and the Lightroom Ecosystem products.
Camera Raw feedback can be found here.

Generative Remove makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions with a simple gesture, even on complex backgrounds. For more accurate results, be sure to include the object's shadow in your selection and/or expand its size.

Detect Objects uses AI to find the objects underneath a brushed area. The masked areas will now appear larger than the Early Access version of this feature. You can also circle objects for quicker selection now.

We have also updated the spot selection experience to make it easier to manage variations, switch the fill type, refine the selection area, or re-generate as needed.

Batch updating is also now supported for Generative Remove spots.

Try out the latest updates and share your feedback with us here. Please also include the following details in your post:
  • App version
  • System details
  • Example image(s) if you wish to share

Our team continually monitors this thread to track issues for future improvement. Thanks!

@Shards: "In the latest version of Lightroom, the pieces generated by generative AI removal are consistently blurry and very messy."

Please post full-resolution screenshots (not phone pics) of the entire LR window after you've selected an object and then again after you've clicked Remove, so we can see the issue in detail.

@Gabriele37417715aprl: "Generative Remove Failed. We've encountered an issue and can't complete your request at this time. Please try again later."

Sometimes firewalls and anti-malware / anti-virus utilities incorrectly block some network requests from LR. Try these troubleshooting steps:

- Temporarily disable all the firewall / anti-malware on your computer. If that solves the problem, then add a specific exclusion for LR to the firewall's rules.

- Connect to another network, preferably one serviced by a different ISP. E.g. a Wifi connection of a neighbor, a coffee shop, work, or your phone's hotspot. Sometimes the routers in these networks block LR's requests, especially in authoritarian countries like China.

To help others, please let us know which of these work and which don't.

On the last version and this current version (I updated today), Generative Remove leaves the outline of the brush stroke. I have no masks on the image and the opacity of the brush is at 100. Does anyone have a fix for this? It's happening on multiple photos.

Please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot) and call out the object you'd like to remove, so we and Adobe can see the issue in detail. Without seeing the original photo, it's hard to help.

Similar to photoshop content aware please allow to select part of the image to give AI an idea of what to generate. I would simply like to expand a backdrop but it generates something else entirely

Trying to remove emergency exit signs with the generative remove tool, it would be really helpful if they were replaced by bits of wall instead of a different light.

See this short article for how to remove objects more reliably:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace/

Most complaints about Remove are addressed in the article. But if it doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot), so we and Adobe can see the issue in detail. With nearly every one of the several dozen problem photos posted here, we've been able to show how to quickly remove the desired objects.

Remove works realy great! 97% is OK. Most of the time "variations 1", sometimes variation 2 or 3 have to be used. Great job!!!!!

I would love to be able to take an ai mask (detect sky feature for example) and then use generative remove for it to replace the sky with another one. Same with detect person, if you could use the ai mask to detect a person, then select face skin and click generative remove.. would be great if it were able to remove all blemishes found on the face skin. I think the ai masks should have some sort of connection with the generative remove tool in certain situations.

Are you applying Remove on top of an AI mask (e.g. Subject, Background, or Sky)?  If so, do Settings > Update AI Settings to recompute the mask.

Hello,

I'm using lightroom classic version 14.1.1 and camera raw 17.1.

I have a trouble when I use the remove tool with AI generative to suppress an object in the sky with opacity set at 100 %. In fact something remains visible. In the file attached I wanted to suppress branches at the bottom, you can see a residue like a light shadow, it's the same with the3 proposals of AI. How to solve this problem ?

best regards.

Guy

It is strange - if I remove an object with AI, there still remain traces that I can not delete.

@tobiasschorr: " if I remove an object with AI, there still remain traces that I can not delete."

1. After clicking Remove, check that the Opacity slider is 100 -- LR infrequently changes it to something else.

2. If you applied Remove on top of an AI mask (e.g. Sky or Subject mask), do the menu command Settings > Update AI Settings to recompute the mask.

3. See this short article for how to remove objects more reliably:

I'm trying to identify, but in some images, the generative fill keeps leaving a visible edge where it removed and object.
Its easy to fix with a healing brush on the edge but still.

@juliaanastazja: "the generative fill keeps leaving a visible edge where it removed and object."

Remove often has problems matching the tone of uniform backgrounds.  Besides using the healing brush (in shorter brush strokes), some other techniques to ameliorate this problem:

- Make the boundary of the selected area very raggedy with tendrils coming out of the edges. This can work well when the background isn't too uniform (as it is with your example).

- Select a much larger area. In your example select all of the grey background right up against the person.
