P: New AI-powered Lens Blur (Early Access) available across all surfaces.

This post applies to Camera Raw, Lightroom Classic & the Lightroom Ecosystem products.

The Lightroom team is sharing an early look for AI-powered Lens Blur–giving you the ability to apply optical blur on any image regardless of how it was taken. Lens Blur is now available to try on all Lightroom surfaces.

How does Lens Blur work?
  • Lens blur applies a depth-based blur effect, similar to what can be achieved with real-world optical lenses, by using AI-generated or device-captured depth data (when available).
  • Lens blur will automatically prioritize focus for the detected subject, but you can also interactively adjust the focus distance. Precise focus range tuning is also available (currently desktop only: Lightroom Desktop, Lightroom Classic, and Camera Raw).
  • You can also further customize the Bokeh shapes, highlight Boost (desktop only), and make depth map refinements (desktop only).

Will my Lens Blur adjustments on one surface be synced to other surfaces? I.e. mobile to web to desktop, and vice versa?
  • Yes, all edits will sync. To revert settings, you can go back to previous versions or history steps, or un-apply Lens Blur settings.

Can I add Lens Blur settings to my presets?
  • No, presets and copy + paste workflows are not currently enabled for Lens Blur during Early Access.

For more information, please check out Lens Blur.

Please give it a try and share feedback in this thread as we continually improve this feature.

Please report your system info via Lightroom>Help>System Info...

If you encounter GPU driver issues while using ML features in LrClassic/LrD/ACR, please try to update to the latest macOS version or if you are on a Windows machine, follow https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html to update your machine to the latest GPU driver and  see if the problem resolves itself.

If the OS or the driver is not available or possible and the problem persists, then try the following

Overall it is working well, but it does struggle to find areas within a basic object selection that should be blurred.  A person adjusting their hair is a recent example where the gap inside their arm and face was completely missed and had to be added via refine..
I agree that an indicator for which images have been blurred in the filmstrip would be a real help

When it finds the edge of a subject, it works very well.  But I could not get good results in areas where it didn't find the subject.  I used refine to paint in the area where it missed the subject using Refine>Focus.  I then tried to erase the area I painted that should be blurred using Refine>Blur>AutoMask, but I could not get a sharp edge on the subject.  This contrasted with the sharp edge I get when Lens Blur actually does find the edge of the subject.  And I could not figure out how to get masking to work with this, because I can get a good sharp mask on a subject with the same technique.

When i choose for selecting person, the ears will be blurred too, sometimes. That's not okay and looks weird too.

Yeah, that's happened to me. That's when you twirl open Refine section and paint with the Focus brush to brush over the ears. Then slide the Amount slider to match the desired blur depth.

Great add, but I'd suggest adding a Paint Brush selection feature to the function.  Clicking and dragging feature is close, but not every selection is going to be a perfect square/rectangle.

I did step 6 and it was fabulous for adding more FOCUS and sharpness, however it didn't work the other way around with the BLUR. It just added more focus when I clicked on the FOCUS and BLUR button. Am doing something wrong? Thanks.

It doesn't look like you've done it wrong... Hmmm. You are using an earlier version of Lightroom based on your screenshot. Maybe try updating to the latest version and let us know if that helps.

Hey hey, I just came here to say that the aplying procces of the Lens blur just changed the wole color temperature of the area blurred. It was warm toned and now is fully cold to green ish toned. That's all, just happened at a few photos that were taken in a forest and the lens blur was applyed on trees and sky that were very warm toned.

It would be good if you implemented the option to "add noise" to the blur to make it look more realistic
