P: New AI-powered Lens Blur (Early Access) available across all surfaces.

This post applies to Camera Raw, Lightroom Classic & the Lightroom Ecosystem products.

The Lightroom team is sharing an early look for AI-powered Lens Blur–giving you the ability to apply optical blur on any image regardless of how it was taken. Lens Blur is now available to try on all Lightroom surfaces.

How does Lens Blur work?
  • Lens blur applies a depth-based blur effect, similar to what can be achieved with real-world optical lenses, by using AI-generated or device-captured depth data (when available).
  • Lens blur will automatically prioritize focus for the detected subject, but you can also interactively adjust the focus distance. Precise focus range tuning is also available (currently desktop only: Lightroom Desktop, Lightroom Classic, and Camera Raw).
  • You can also further customize the Bokeh shapes, highlight Boost (desktop only), and make depth map refinements (desktop only).

Will my Lens Blur adjustments on one surface be synced to other surfaces? I.e. mobile to web to desktop, and vice versa?
  • Yes, all edits will sync. To revert settings, you can go back to previous versions or history steps, or un-apply Lens Blur settings.

Can I add Lens Blur settings to my presets?
  • No, presets and copy + paste workflows are not currently enabled for Lens Blur during Early Access.

For more information, please check out Lens Blur.

Please give it a try and share feedback in this thread as we continually improve this feature.

If the OS or the driver is not available or possible and the problem persists, then try the following workaround method as a last resort. The method provides a mechanism to allow LrDesktop/LrClassic/ACR customers to force the ML inference to always run on CPU instead of default. See details here https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/acr-gpu-faq.html#lens-blur

Used tis funtionality for the first time and it really does well, I am a sports photographer and spent years looking to get backgrounds right and this works great to tweak. Great job well done.

The AI frequently guesses the depth wrong. Rather than try to make it perfect, it would be good to be able to paint areas to increase or decrease the 'depth' of that portion of the image. The visualize depth feature is very slow and frequently completely blacks out the window, to the point that it's not really usable. The wrong guessing of depth renders the ability to change the portion of the depth map that is to be defocused moot. I could see this working well for simple images but for complex ones with a lot of people in foreground or background it really struggles. In one particular example I have a bike race photo shot at f/4.5 which blurs the background but less than I'd like. I want to bring more emphasis to those riders who are completely in focus and are the subject of the photo. The feature doesn't do well with that at all.

Early days, of course, but subject detection needs to be refined. The AI identified the boat, but the narrow antennas were not distinguished against the sky background.

I had been enthustiac about this but after trying if further I see serious problems.

1) I wish they would call the refine brushes "Refine Edge" Brush. In the dialog, until I watched Julieanne's video I didn't know what it was. Consistincy PLEASE..

2) I have a decent graphics card and yet this is terribly slow and fraught with black screens.

3) To me, this feature should be in the Masking dialog instead of the main dialog, so the subject can be selected and refined, and THEN Lens Blur could be applied using the "Intersect with" control so only the background can be selected. That's because it is much easier to select and refine the subject in Masking, where we're already familiar with using the tools. Further adjustments could then be available using brushes in the normal manner. I think being in the WRONG SECTION of LIGHTROOM is restricting its functionality.

I just tried first going to Masking and selecting the subject, then I returned to the main dialog and applied the lens blur. The Lens Blur completely obliterated my subject mask and now even in the main dialog, screens are going black. For sure this is in the wrong place!

To make matters worse, despite Auto Masking being checked, it seems to be nowhere near as functional as the auto masking of normal brushes. It has to be refined and refined and it is SLOW and has Black Screen after Black Screen, which never happens for me using brushes in the Masking dialog.

Instead of doing this, I can flip the image to Photoshop, and use an Action I made that selects subject onto a masked layer then dups the background, makes it a smart object and applies the lens blur filter with 9 evenly spaced selection points that can each be manipulated to give the intended blur. Bokeh can be added, etc., and in under 2 minutes, I have an image with realistic depth blur NO BLACK SCREENS and no tedious corrections. and the benifit of being able to refine the subject mask, the blur in areas of the background, etc.

I'm sure this will get better but to me it is in the wrong place and rather than working in conjunction with the excellent Masking process Adobe worked so hard to give us, it is working at cross purposes with Masking.

This needs a re-think. It's like they have 2 teams adding features, each trying to look superior ...and they don't get along with each other.

I have just tried out the lens blur and focus tab.. after finishing I am stuck on the brush used to add blur and focus, even if i pull out of that tab and go into another.. only way out is to close down lightroom and start again.

anyone els had this problem or is it just isolated to my computer again lol...

For complex subjects, I would like to see a way to subtract from the lens blur effect, in order to bring badly selected subjects into focus.  Thanks.

I just started using the feature and have noticed right away the same issue as the subject and background masks. It's not really accurate in defining the correct depth. A nice feature would be to have the option to correct these deffects with a brush, similar to the AI masking tool.  Here is an example with the dog's ear. DSC_8645.jpgDSC_8645-2.jpg

This advice was helpful, the user interface for accessing the brush wasn't obvious to me. Couldn't that be reduced to a single slider for Amount that went from Blur on the left to Focus on the right, so that a brush can be offered right away when refine is selected?  To go along with this you could change the refine from an openable settings panel to an actual mode so that you get the brush when refine is open and you lose it when you close it, like you would say the crop tools, healing tools, etc?

Anyway, I still can't get usable images out of this in a reasonable amount of time. The brush mode is maddeningly slow - really not usable. It also draws seemingly random 'lines' of brush strokes because of its unpredictable delays between user between the brush movement and recording the operation. If it can't be made fast, how about changing the brush cursor to an hourglass or some other wait symbol to make this predictable?

Another note - ctrl-z/undo operations take the interface out of visualize depth mode even if the action had been taken with visualize depth on, so you can't see what the undo effect was in terms of brush strokes.  As with the brush strokes and other UI interactions, there are gross delays between the undo operation and the screen update - e.g. ctrl-z removes the visualize depth checkmark, shows 'undo' for six seconds, blacks out the screen for 2.5 seconds, then the screen blinks back in still in visualize mode, then another one second delay and redraws with the visualize depth coloring gone.

Today's info - graphics driver updated to 3758:
