"preview unavailable for this file" Sony .arw HELP!!

Community Beginner ,
Apr 07, 2019 Apr 07, 2019

When I try to import Sony raw files from A7iii it brings up "preview unavailable for this file". I have updated everything to the latest lightroom cc 2.2.1, cc classic 8.2.1, photoshop 20.0.4 and camera raw 11.2.1. The files will not import to lightroom. They will open on my iMac desktop but not to my MacBook. Any ideas?

The Sony A7 III requires LR 7.3 or later.  Update your LR CC 2015.12 to LR Classic 8.2.1 by doing Help > Updates.

First, triplecheck you have 8.2.1 installed by doing the menu command Help > System Info.   The Creative Cloud app is notorious for fooling people into thinking they have "the latest".

Thanks for the reply John. All apps are definitely updated and my system is also running the latest MacOS Mojave. All specs on my MacBook meet the requirements also.

If you upload one of the problem files to Dropbox or similar and post the sharing link here, we can see if the problem occurs on another LR installation. That will narrow down whether the problem is with the file itself or your hardware or LR installation.

I haven't got the file on me at the moment. The files do import fine when on my Mac desktop though and all the updates are the same as my MacBook so I'm assuming the files are fine. They also open fine in camera raw, photoshop and Lightroom CC just not CC Classic

Thanks John. I had the update. I've figured it out now but I'm not going to say what I did because it's too dumb to tell anyone haha

I'm glad you figured it out, but I am having the same issue with my Nikon Z6.  I'm sure it seemed dumb to you, but knowing what you did to fix it might be helpful.  Thanks.

Chris

Lightroom CC 2015.14 is NOT anywhere near up to date. The latest version is Lightroom Classic CC 8.21. Regardless of what your computer might indicate you are not up to date. You are several updates/upgrades behind, and that is why you don't have support for your camera.

Weird.  I even uninstalled and reinstalled Lightroom.  How do I get up to date?

You should be able to install the latest version from the creative cloud application. Perhaps you need to upgrade that application the first. What operating system are you running?

Okay, got it figured out.  Not my workstation, was trying to fix it for someone else in the office.  They had the latest version of Lightroom installed . . . but they were opening the ancient version, which was still installed.  New version working fine.

What operating system are you using?

If an older version of Apple Mac OS X then that is your problem. LR Classic V8 (possibly also V7) doesn't run on some older version of OS X.

Also V8 of LR does not run on Windows 8.x. It only runs on Win 7 and 10.
