Renaming External Hard Drive Which Contains Images for LR

I have a portable 5TB external hard drive dedicated to images on LR Classic. Is there a way to change the name of the hard drive without messing up the connection between the images on the 5 TB HD and the LR Classic Catalogue?

Why bother? The simplest thing to do is to NOT change the drive name? What is the benefit of doing this change?

In my case, I have my external drives containing various years of images. So as we are approaching 2025, I want to update the name of that drive to cover 2025.

After renaming, the catalog is probably going to show that all photos are missing (you’ll see question mark icons), because it can’t find them under the old volume name. No problem…right-click a top level folder in that volume and choose Find Missing Folder. If right-click isn’t enabled on your Mac, Control-click that folder instead. After you select the volume under its new name, Lightroom Classic will re-link images in that folder, and in all of its subfolders.

If there are other top-level folders in that volume, repeat that step for each of them. The higher up you can resolve the folders, the fewer of them you have to do. If there’s only one parent folder on that volume, then you’ll only have to do this once.
