When will Lightroom Classic support raw files from Sony RX100 VI?

Bottom line, it is not because it cannot happen, it is because one or the other party is disinterested in making it happen.

Given that none of the software vendors have issued updates for the RX100 VI yet, it seems that (2) is more likely.

But why don't the camera makers include a Save to DNG feature in their cameras? That would then mean no software updates would be required.

With phones and computers, support can be done during a many-months beta period.

With cameras Adobe needs a shipping production model not a beta otherwise the colors will be off.

Neither Adobe and the camera manufacturers want to tie their release schedules to the other and without a long beta period there isn't a lot different that can happen.

Back before LR, when a Camera Raw plug-in update could be released without having to release a new version of Photoshop a faster turn-around was theoretically possible.  With Lightroom the enhancements, bug-fixes and camera support are all mixed together so the release schedule needs to be spaced out with a longer-than-for-camera-support internal testing period.

You still have a choice when to buy a new camera.

Again, this reply shows either extreme naiveté or is an explicit attempt to mislead.

Cell phones do not have 'man-months BETA periods', at least not anymore.  Product cycles are short, and the test cycle is mostly VERY private, not the old 'BETA' period (too much risk of the device being seen and ending up in news flashes, or accidentally left in a bar in RWC ....).  Further, the last part, and it is a long period,  of bringing ANY modern computer or cellphone to market is awaiting government testing and certification; in the US this means the FCC.  And guess what?  CAMERAS have the EXACT same requirement; any device with a transmitting radio, e.g., WiFi or Bluetooth, has to be submitted for regulatory review and certification and during that period NO CHANGES can be made (else, the submission has to be pulled and the revised device submitted).  So the Sony RX100M6 had the same final long certification period as, say, the iPhone X.   And during that period Sony could have been working to get the 3rd party support aligned.

My earlier comment stands; the ONLY reason there was no day 1 support for the camera is that one part or the other did not want that to happen.

Yes of course. Times have changed. No one wants to publish specs earlier than release date. Same with Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and other companies. Lightroom 7.4 was published 06/16/2018 and the RX100 VI just two week earlier. So just feel free to complain if LR 7.5 doesn’t support the RX100 VI. No camera I bought since RAW-files came up had full 3rd party RAW-support from day one.

It always comes, and it always works. Despite all of the ranting and raving and complaining and blaming Adobe and everything else that goes on, the process is the same. Now, all of you Sony users can be happy. But what about the next new camera that comes along? The whole cycle will start over again, and the same questions and the same blaming and the same frustration will start over again too.

Totally understandable, but from the company point of view, the picture is bigger than that. I don't just mean Adobe; most software companies are going to release updates like this:

They would rather release fewer, more manageable updates instead of an update for every little fix, so with the current version as the baseline, they'll list all of the new cameras that need raw support, list all the bugs that must be fixed in the next update, and list any enhancements to be added. The release happens when all of the items on those lists is written, tested, debugged, and verified. We users might need just one enhancement, but that plane doesn't leave the gate until everything else that's supposed to be on it is loaded.

The good news is that the updates do happen regularly. Every RX100 has gotten its update in the usual window of time after release, and this one will too.

Adobe needs a production level camera to profile otherwise the colors will be off.  The only "work things out" that could have happened is Sony could have given a production camera to Adobe, but then held any sales to someone like you for several weeks or months until a new LR was released that included support.

This coordination between Adobe and Sony wouldn't have resulted in the camera being supported any earlier, but you'd be prevented from buying it until LR had support.

But why should Adobe and Sony go to all that trouble when it'd be equivalent to your just waiting to buy it until LR had support.

Just use Sony’s Edit from Imaging Edge until another company supports the VI. It’s as simple as that. When you buy any new camera shortly after release you always have to wait for full third party support. No matter if you are an Canikon oder Sony aficionado. This is a typical first-time-RAW-user-question
