Unspecified slowness in Lightroom since v13.5.1 on iMac

I followed the tips on adobe to improve performace, and I work off an external hard drive.  The lag is still horrible.  Any tips? 

I have an iMac with M1 chip,  16BG, OS 14.6.1.  my external hardive is a WD with 4TB of space thats 50% full....

Everything!  Literally. And I hate using that word "literally"

If you are using an anti-virus program, temporarily turn it off and see if that helps.

To @dj_paige 's question: 

Examples of good details:

• It takes 9 minutes to export 10 images, and it used to take 45 seconds
• It takes 20 seconds to move from one image to the next in Develop - it used to be less than a second
• Denoise was taking 25 seconds for one image now it takes 12 minutes

Examples of bad details: 

• Any statement with the word "lag"
• Any statement with the word  "everything"
  
  

It is very difficult to offer advice without knowing exactly what is happening. Please help us with additional details.

Just to toggle between photos takes 10 seconds, or freezes.  Editing photos, the same.
