I downloaded 250 photos and had been working on them.
The file is now showing on 31 images, where have they gone and how to recover them?

Do you have a filter activated? Press Cmd + L or Ctrl + L to disable filters.
Are you looking in the correct folder. Try clicking on All Photographs at the top left of the Library Module in the Catalog Panel.
Are you using Lightroom Classic CC? Which version?

Thanks.
Ive tried both suggestions, they don't seem to be in 'all photos' and Im using latest LR, just updated it this week.
So annoying. Not sure how they could just disappear, but if they had, where would they go, not in deleted no filters on?

What folder did you import them to?
Is that folder visible in the Folders Panel?
Right. Lick on that folder, select view in Finder (File Explorer Windows?), see if the files exists.

Just to be sure, the advice was to do BOTH: turn filters off and then check in "All Photographs". Did you do that?
If that doesn't find the photos, please perform this four-step search (perform all four steps, in order):
1. In the Lightroom Library Module, on the left, under Catalog, click on All Photographs
2. Turn off all filters (Ctrl-L once or twice)
3. Turn off all stacking (Photo->Stacking->Expand All Stacks)
4. Search for at least one of these photos by file name using the Lightroom Filter Bar
