hi,
I have rather big photo catalog (~80k of photos) where most of the photos are processed. Since ever I had enabled writing to sidecar XMP files, so all changes are stored there. I noticed that that latest LR Classic CC is not respecting those files - syncing/updating metadata from file does not help, nor creating new catalog and re-importing photos. All photos are visible as if they were just imported from camera. When new changes are done, the XMP file gets updated and in the file content I see old changes plus new changes, however only new ones are being displayed in LR. Did the XMP format changed that some parts are not properly recognized by latest LR? Any ideas how to solve that? I can't re-process my entire catalog!
Another issue is that "\" keyboard shortcut ("view before only") in develop module shows file at first entry of modification history instead of showing original file! In case XMP files were present at the import time, the initial state of the file is the one from XMP so the one containing changes, not the original. This makes the "before" view useless as you can't see differences between processed and original photo. Is there a way to view in LR the original file instead of one at import time?
regards,
Artur

Both of the things you are having problems with work fine on my system. If I open an image through Bridge in ACR and make change to it when I go back to LT there is an upward facing arrow with 3 line to the left of it letting me know that there has been changes made to that file outside of LR, a Metadata mismatch. If I click that icon and then select Import Settings from Disk it updates the file in LR.
As for the \ shortcut it is working fine here. In the Develop module if I hit the \ key it goes back to the original image and if I hit that key again it adds back the edits I made.

I use Lightroom since version 3 as far as I remember. It could be the case that some of my XMP files are "too old" for latest LR. When doing previous upgrades I never had this issue that changes were not visible, until now. That's why they let you create sidecar files to store changes so you get them back after importing in new catalog or in new LR version. This does not work for me and I didn't even move or rename files in the meantime.
Regarding \ shortcut - if you do some changes and XMP file gets created, create new catalog, import file and press \ - you will see no difference, while you should see your original file. When you do additional changes and press \ again you will see photo as if it was at the import time, so not the original one.

Actually all of the edits you do along with collections and other various things are store in the LR catalog file even if you have Auto write changes to XMP selected in the Catalog settings dialog.
So I doubt it is because you have old XMP files. I have RAW files going back to 2006 that are read fine in LR Classic CC.
