Dragging files to external hardrive failure.

Hi I am new to Lightroom. I have tried to move my collection to an external hard drive. When I drag the file to the new hardrive and file they fail to highlight in blue and the file returns to its collection. What an I doing wrong?

You can't move collections. Collections exist only in the Lightroom catalog, and they do not exist in folders and they do not exist on a hard drive (except in the trivial sense that they exist in the catalog on whatever drive that is on).
