When we don't use the license number we can record to a flv file with no problems, but when we put the license number in ams.ini file and restart ams service, we can record a video.
We are using AMS_5_0_1_r1076, on a linux box from amazon, using amazon linux AMI.

I am assuming you mean after you enter license key details - you are not able to record. I suspect you have got "Standard" Edition license and that edition does not allow "recording". You can check your license details by logging into Admin Console -> manage servers -> License tab - this would show you what license you have.
If you have any other license other than Standard and then you are seeing issue - let us know.
