P: PS v26.1 "Import video to layers" not usable any more with ProRes (4444, 422)

Explorer ,
Nov 26, 2024 Nov 26, 2024

The "import video to layers" features is unusable after the latest update.

Since I use this feature all the time this is critical for me!

- i am using a .mov file that has worked before (prores 4444, 10mb, 3seconds)

- clicking ok makes the dialog hang 30 seconds with spinning beach ball

- "Making layers" process takes 7 minutes! It took 7 seconds before!

- the opened layers are all empty

Hi All! Please test if the issue exists with the latest build of Photoshop Beta. Get Photoshop (beta) from the Apps section > Beta Apps in the Creative Cloud desktop app.

Thanks!

Hey, @jr-komoot. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll need more information to help you figure this out. Please share the system information from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > Upload and attach here.

Does this happen with all video files on your machine? Or does this happen with a specific video?

Try using Photoshop (beta) from the beta apps section in the Creative Cloud desktop app and check how it goes.

Thanks!

hi @Sameer K, thanks for your reply. i've atttached my system info.

i have tested multiple video files, but all prores 4444 encoded. i've also tried a video that is known to have worked in PS 26.0.

I have reinstalled 26.0 and there everything works fine.

The beta works also.

Windows 10/11
Photoshop 26.1

If you drag and drop mov (Prores 422 proxy), it will take a long time to load. Furthermore, mov will not be loaded correctly and an empty video layer will be created, and if you continue to do so, Photoshop will crash.
The results are the same even when importing from the File menu.

I was able to use Photoshop 26.0 without any problems, so I've gone back to that version and am working on it. I hope the problem will be resolved soon.

I have a 2019 iMac, running OS Sonoma.  Latest Photoshop 2025 cannot import video frames to layers.  It churns for several minutes, then imports empty layers.  The same video file works fine in PSD 2024.  I uninstalled and reinstalled, no change.

Thanks.

Since I think Photoshop CS5 (2010 I believe?), I have made animated GIFs the same way:

  1. Animate in After Effects
  2. Export as lossless MOV
  3. Import in Photoshop in the animation timeline
  4. Save for Web and finetune GIF settings

It was still working a couple of weeks ago. However, it seems that Photoshop now freezes (and has to be force-quit) when importing a lossless MOV. Can this be fixed? Thanks!

I have the same problem, and it started happening this week. Photoshop 26.1.0, Macbook Pro M1 Max.

Particularly annoying because I use Photoshop to create highly optimised gifs (utilising the video timeline to composite video layers with masks and rasterized layers). I no longer have the ability to do this.

Same here. It's the best workflow I've found for meeting ridiculous GIF file size restrictions. Fortunately, Photoshop 2024 still works. -- *Tom Milner

The same result is obtained with beta(26.3).

1. It takes a long time to load, or it freezes.
2. An empty video layer is created.

At present, the only version that works reliably is 2024 (25.12.0).

Hey, @SergioNetg. Thanks for your comment. Have you tested the latest version of Photoshop (beta)? If yes, please share a sample video & the system information from Photoshop & Photoshop (beta) Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > Upload and attach here, or send it to me via direct message.

Thanks!

Hello,
I recently updated Photoshop to 26.1.0.
And when importing .Mov files, these are not showing up and they are transparant in the document.
And photoshop 2024 WAS able to load these files and actually i was able to open them before the last update too. And some of those files have lets say a beating heart like a psd file with nothing around them you just place them were needed and are even changable with styles. a mp4 can not do that.
I know its not the right program to do it with, but for those 2 a 3 times a month i need it its fine and does the job.

Gracias.

After updating to the latest version of Photoshop (26.2), it is no longer able to open any video files with transparency. In previous versions, it could open .mov files with the Apple ProRes 4444 codec without any issues. Currently, it cannot open these files. I need to know if this is a bug that will be fixed or if support for this type of file has been discontinued. Thank you.

I just noticed that my Photoshop 26.2 can't open MOV ProRes 444 files properly, on Windows 11.
It just shows a blank canvas. Empty frames. 🤔
I don't know if this effects other formats, or if it was a problem before this version.

Also, on a side note, the option for 25% and 50% resolution for Photoshop's Timeline does nothing. It doesn't change the resoultion during playback, as it should. It's been like that for a few versions now, would be nice to see this fixed.🤷

Photoshop 26.2.0 won't import MP4 files on my Mac, despite the person sitting opposite me being able to do this. I've created an H264 .mov and .mp4 but neither will import.

Meanwhile I could fix the issue using the .mov files with the codec "GoPro CineForm RGB".
I would like to know if this is a bug that will be fixed or if support for .mov files has been discontinued !

I'm trying to open a .mov file in Photoshop, and am getting  a typical useless Adobe "Could not open "filename.mov" because the video file could not be opened." message.

(4K .mov files from a Nikon Z8, updated Photoshop 2025, Windows, h.265 codecs installed)

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Hello,

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro with the M4 chip and installed the latest version of Photoshop (2025).

When I try to use the “Import Video Frames to Layers” feature, I get the following error messages:

- “Could not complete the command because the file format module cannot parse the file.”
- “This computer does not support the AVX/AVX2 instruction set.”

Even after converting my video to MP4 (H.264), the issue persists. I’ve also tried launching Photoshop with Rosetta, granting full disk access, resetting preferences, and reinstalling the application — none of these resolved the problem.

It seems like this issue may be specific to Apple Silicon Macs or Photoshop 2025.
Could you please confirm:
- Is this a known compatibility issue?
- Has Adobe deprecated this feature?
- Is there a workaround or fix available?

Thank you for your help!

I have the solution!

So if you have a Mac you can go to:

macOS Keychain Access.

Under login

Put the keys in alphabetical order.

Delete all the adobe keys.

Log out of Creative cloud.

Restart your CPU then the issue should be fixed!

I have Verona, Updated Photoshop 26.1, imac M1 chip if that helps!

hey there, I have bee scouting the internet and have not found a solution for this. I just updated to latest PS build 26.6 and it stopped opening .mov files. So much to the point it drags and drags and I have to close PS. I installed a prior version 22.2 and it works fine, like it did before. So something clearly got broken somewhere. Has there been any updates to this issue? Seems to be a bug for sure. im still looking but this is the first most recent place ive found to post.
