P: Text tool Problem: A bunch of small text is all over my screen

Community Beginner ,
May 15, 2021 May 15, 2021

So like usual, I made a text box to start typing but I don't know what happened because now there is the same word in various small fonts all over my work. I have no idea where it came from. If you look at the photo, there is the word "Jin" in white everywhere and I can't seem to remove it.

Just wanted to follow up. We have figured out the issue and we are in the process of figuring out how to fix it. In the meantime, the workarounds are thus: Either open the text frame, which seems to make the fragments disappear, or use a paragraph text frame (tap-drag a text frame, rather than just tap with the text tool.) the problem appears to be specifically related to point text frames. Hope that helps. I'll let you know when a fix is in place.

I would always turn off Auto updates and run manually as you do.

The option for removing older installs only shows when you are installing the new version the first time, otherwise the update button only affects the noted installed version - it wouldn't remove older versions on a point upgrade.

BTW/FWIW – After I turned off naive canvas, I started seeing anew bug; when I open a smart object to edit, it's scrambled… looking like tiles that are. bits of the parent document. If I close the smart object and reopen, it previews properly. Never saw that before I turned off native canvas.

It's February 13, 2024 and this issue just happened to me.

Repeated text boxes all over my art work and I can't seem to find what the glitched object might be. I found 1 that removed 1 of them but everything else won't go away.

Not sure how it's 2024, and this is still an issue.  Adobe??

Hi Benjamin, your work arounds don't work. I did a paragraph text box and when I touch out of it I get the random letters everywhere. Sure, they disappear when I touch back into it, but I can't save it and print it like that so it's useless. It's 2024 and you STILL haven't fixed this yet?

Tap the Home button in the upper left corner. On the file you were just working on, tap the "..." and select View Version History. Choose the version just before the text craziness happens. Then tap the "..." and choose Revert to This Version. After it opens, restart Photoshop.

That's the only fix I've found. Hope that helps.

Having this issue in July 2024. This bug seems to have been around 5+ years. In my case, I was editing text and got an unnamed "program error". I managed to temporarily fix it by resetting the font cache, deleting all text elements and recreating them, and toggling visibility on all elements. The issue came back again when I tried to export and I was given another program error.

It sucks to lose all my progress to revert to the oldest state of my doc. Having this issue now and losing 40 minutes plus of progress. Not sure it's even worth having ps on my iPad at this rate

I have this same issue every single time I use photoshop. It is infuriating. I will get SO close to finishing, then the last word or even letter I have to type flies all over my image. I have to delete ALL the text and start over. This time, its gotten worse and worse and I am unable to finish my photo. I have had to revert to finishing my photo and applying text on a separate application. It is insane this problem has been happening for so long and they have yet to fix it.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I first complained about this problem in early 2021 and it's still happening. So clearly, Adobe is working diligently to find a solution. Just keep paying those monthly fees. They promise, a solution is coming soon. 👍🏻

For me also the same problem. After wasting a lot of time and energy figuring out what is going on, I came to this thread. Seems the problem exists already for a while and not being fixed. Clear for me now. Not going to waste more money on this

Here in 2025, running into the same issue... It seems to have sprung up out of nowhere. I've been using PS all year without this issue. Today, it is plaguing all of my projects. I've tried manually erasing the excess type but it seems to create even MORE fragments when I do that. Nothing in preferences has helped. Using the paragraph text frame as mentioned by the Adobe Employee didn't help. It's ANY text I create that causes this issue. I will try reinstalling but I've tried everything else I can think of so far.

Can someone please chime in on this? I'm running the latest PS 2025 and having this repeated text issue. It's ruined multiple files and I have deadlines. And the issue which started in one file is now transferred to another, text that was never there on the second file. What do I do?????

Just wondering, was anyone else with this issue using VARIABLE FONTS? I loaded some fonts through Adobe right before this and some were variable. I deleted some fonts and it seems like the issue went away, once I reset all type. I'll see if it comes back.

I MAY HAVE FOUND A SOLUTION
Click on your text layer (dont double click to edit the text, just click the layer > go into the font selection drop down > reselect your font that you had selected. (The two drop down bars were blank when I first clicked on the layer and didnt show a font selected)

I think it's a glitch with a downloaded font. When I clicked the layer, reselected my font from the drop down menu, all the patterning text disappeared from my project and it fixed the issue.

Let me know if this works for yall! It was giving me a headache
