P: Photoshop 26.7 can't be set as default app for JPGs or TIFs on MacOS

Participant ,
May 27, 2025 May 27, 2025

This update broke the "default app" on Mac OS again...

After the Update to 26.7 the default app is set to Adobe Acrobat, double clicking JPG or TIF will open the Preview App.

Photoshop can not be set as default app, it will always be set back to Acrobat.

Deleting Photoshop and installing Version 26.6.1 lets you set Photoshop as default and keeps it, so it's a problem of 26.7.

I'm using Mac OS Sequoia 15.5

Please fix this, it's extremely annoying. Thanks.

I think I have a work around. I did have Photoshop Beta installed and removed it ages ago. I have reninstalled and now have both Beta and 26.10 installed. I was able to to set 26.10 as my default app again for images and all is working as it should. I might try removing both again to see what happens. But not going to poke that bear just yet as it is working.

Hi All! If you're still seeing this behavior, try these steps:

1 - Please uninstall Photoshop 2025 and Photoshop (beta). Deleting any preferences is not required.

2 - Restart your machine.

3 - Reinstall Photoshop & Photoshop (beta) & check if the behavior exists.

Optionally, make sure Photoshop & Photoshop (beta) are added to the full disk access on macOS: https://adobe.ly/4mvJ423

Let me know how it goes.

Manny of the associations no longer work!   That means that if you double click on a .PNG-file it will open in anything BUT Photoshop!  ( Even if you click on INFO of the .PNG-image and change the default  programme to open with to Photoshop.! )  This goes for .PNG, ..TIF and .JPG.   At least... that's what's happening on my Apple Sillicon Mac ( Seqouia 15.5  Photoshop v. 26.9.0 ).    Setting any image to default-open in Photoshop 25.12.4 does work!

that's an os issue if you're unable to assign a default opening app for particular file types.  google your os and the problem.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.

In general file associations are linked to the last version of Photoshop installed / updated. It sounds like 25.12.4 may have been updated, on your system, after v26.9.  In that case you will need to go into your operating system and set the file associations manually.

[cursing removed] is happening with Adobe lately?

First, the horrible and useless Lr update a month ago and now you can't even double click on a jpg or heic to open in Photoshop.

Even going to: get info: open with Photoshop 25 : change all,  won't stick. IT defaults to Lightroom or Illustrator but will only open images on Apple's Preview app!!!!

[cursing removed]

Downgrading to PS 26.8.1 works fine...

Its unbelievable...

It's like there is no quality control anymore.

Selecting area at the image > Generative Fill > and if I want write in the right bar new prompt, it doesnt work > enter > and the prompt is in the name of the layer but generated area is different and didn't use my prompt.

Solution: Use Photoshop 26.8.1

@Daniel Ulysses  Sorry, ut your statements are not very helpful

Please be more specific. What are the issues/problems that you have?

Is your system up-to-date? Do you have installed all recent updates and patches for the operating system and the device drivers, especially the graphic driver. If you have a NVidia graphic card installed, make sure that you are using the recent Studio version of the driver, not the Game Ready version.

Please provide a copy of your 'System Info'. This can be get from the Photoshop menu item Help > System Info. There's a copy button in the System Info dialog. Press this button and paste the info into your next forum post.

Without more and detailed informations nobody can say more and try to help.

it's simple. I can't double click on a jpg, png or any image format and open it in PS 26.9.

Trying to choose Photoshop 25 as the "open this application to open documents like this one" won't stick. In fact, you can't even choose any Adobe product. It will always open with the "Preview"App instead.

Downgrading to 26.8.1 works normally. Like on this example.

I see the same issue on other conversations, Even on Windows.

Since updating to Photoshop 26.10 Mac I can no longer open any files. When I try to open any file (jpg, png etc) it defaults to mac os Preview app. When check 'open with' settings these files are set to Adobe Acrobat and when I change it back to Photoshop I the get the mac malware warning and the file won't open.

This definatly a problem with Photoshop, as I do not get this issue when I revert back to Photoshop 26.9.

Has anyone else had this issue?

I had the same problem with 26.9 but it has been fixed since then. 26.10 works fine for me.
