On Windows select the T symbol from the tools pallet.

Set the font to Windings

Click on your image and hold down the Alt key and keep holding

Type on the numeric keypad 0252 then release the alt key

I can click on the "T" symbol but nothing comes up and I can't find anywhere the font or windings option, font and windings is NOT located under any of the Tabs?

On the options bar click the dropdown arrow next to the font name and scroll down or highlight the name e.g. Arial and use the down arrow key on the keyboard to scroll through the list.

You can do it via the Shape Selection Tool as well.

This tool has a Symbols library, which contains the Checkmark. You can drag it to a size to suit. It displays with the foreground color. It comes in on a separate layer and can be positioned with the move tool. Very versatile!
