Is Photoshop Elements 6 compatible with 64-bit Windows 7?

I have been unable to open PSE 6 in Windows 7. It worked on my old computer which used XP Home SP3.

Is it a clean Windows 7 installation,i.e. not an upgrade?

I am running PSE 6 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and it works perfectly and it was the same when using Vista 64. But I made a clean installation in both cases since that is the best way to avoid problems when shifting OS. I did try an upgrade but that gave me problems with Lightroom but after a clean installation Lightroom also worked perfectly.

So the answer is yes, PSE 6 should run just fine on 64-bit Windows 7.

Give more details about what happens?

PSE 6 generally runs fine on Vista 64.  I haven't seen any reports about it one way or the other on Windows 7 yet.

PSE6 is not supported on Windows 7.So, it is expected that it might not work properly.

Hi Russ1931,

yes it works on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits perfectly for the last 2 months, HP laptop Dual Core DV6753CA with 4GB RAM.

Just got one problem now (since 10 minutes ago), I added an USB scratch disk and now my PE6 editor doesn't want to open.  But if I eject my USB drive first then no problem,

Only thing is that my scratch drive (internal) file get as big as 46GB+ while working a poster so I added the extra external drive and now PE6 refuses to open when my USB drive is present even if it is not marked as primary.

Hope it helps and will try to resolve my other issue.

Ah. A positive response! I'm using Windows 7 Premium on my new HP desktop

with an Athlon2 quad processor, I believe. Still getting used to it. I can

open the "downloader file" and the "readme file", but not the overall

program executable file. The hard drive capacity is 750Gb. The memory is

8Gb.

Do you have administrator rights? Have you tried right click on setup.exe and tried "run as administrator"?


When Adobe says they don't support PSE6 on 64-bit Windows 7 my believe is that you should interpret it as they have not tested it fully and will not get involved in any support issues regarding this. And I fully understand them since Windows 7 was launched after PSE6.


I have a Dell Studio XPS with 64-bit Windows 7 and PSE6 works perfectly so if the administrator stuff not works I am not able to offer any more help. Could it be hardware related? Any BIOS update available?

Administrator rights haven't solved this, so far. I can launch the

downloader executable app . Also, I can list all the PE6 files as

successfully installed. I cannot open the organizer, editor, or basic PE6

apps. Also, I can open the readme file. Interestingly, when I look at my "My

Pictures files" under "Pictures", they are all "read, only." They were

copied over to the new computer from my old computer's hard drive which was

installed in an USB enclosure. I can open all of the pictures for viewing

through Windows 7. My new computer is a HP desktop with Windows 7 Premium, a

750 Gb HD and 8 Gb DD3 RAM. The deceased computer was a Dell Dimension 4700

with XP Home SP3, an 80 Gb HD and 2 Gb DDR2 RAM. ..............I am about

ready to go to PSE8. .......Russ

Your problem may be resolved by now, but I was able to solve the same thing by right clicking on the extractor program and clicking on "troubleshoot compatability." It installed correctly after this and Elements seems to be working ok.

I'm having the same problem on my new computer.  Photoshop Elements 6 seems to install correctly on my HP desktop with Windows 7, but when I try to run the program, it never actually loads.  I've tried running it in several different compatibility modes, and as an administrator, but the same thing always happens (or more accurately, never happens).  Does anyone have any suggestions?

When you try that, make sure you right-click the program icon or Start menu item and select Run As Administrator.  Running a program in an account that is a member of Administrators is not the same thing (as it was on XP).

If that doesn't work, you could be encountering one of the many reasons why PSE might crash or freeze, most of which are independent of the version of Windows. Unfortunately, these can be hard to diagnose quickly, and the best approach is to work methodically through all the known troubleshooting steps:

I had a similar problem, my Photoshop elements 6 just would not open. But I figured out a way to get it to work for me.

I went to www.adobe.com and downloaded the trial version of Photoshop elements 8.0. After the trial version of Photoshop elements 8.0 installed I then installed my copy of Photoshop elements 6.0. Then for some reason it works. So my suggestion is to download Photoshop elements 8 form adobe and then install Photoshop elements 6 and see if that fixes the problem.

adobefreak879's solution worked!  As he suggested, I downloaded and installed the Trial version of PhotoShop Elements 8.  Once that finished, I fired it up once.

Then I was able to successfully start and run PSE 6 on my Windows 7 machine!

Yaaaaay!  

Hopefully it'll keep running after I remove the trial version of PSE 8???

I didn't have this problem, but I haven't uninstalled the trial of PSE 8 yet.

However, I noticed that the trial version has become the default photo editor.

Hopefully your issue is a fluke?  Have you tried opening the editor directly from Windows Explorer by navigating to the program?

I think you did it the same way I did it. These are the exact steps I took.

I started off with nether PSE 6 or PSE 8 installed on my computer, also I just got my computer, 2 days before I got PSE to work, so it did not have many programs installed on it. Then I first downloaded and installed PSE 8. I then clicked the open button on PSE 8 and the screen came up letting you choose whether to use the trial or to enter a CD-key. I did not click anything I just closed PSE 8 at that point. Then I installed PSE 6 onto my computer and it worked.

So I would make sure that neither PSE is installed when you start the installation process.

I had similar problem with my PSE6 no longer running...ran the fix license

ing step proposed by John R ellis and it now works just fine THANKS JOHN !!  Suspect that those of you who downloaded the PSE8 trial version to get PSE6 to run probably found an alternate way to running "fix the licensing step" but that is a WAG on my part..LOL.

I am having the same problem. It is a clean install running W 7. It seems like Al Chemist has solved the problem. Can you( or any one else) tell me exactly what needs to be done. I am logged in as an Administrator. And I did RT. click the PSE Icon on the desk top and chose 'Run in Administrator mode'. Did I need to change anything in 'Properties' too?

I have also tried to run it in W-XP Compatible mode. Did not work. I am able to open the Adobe Photoshop Downloader part of it from the System Tray. But when I actually click on the Desk-top Icon, nothing happens.

This is driving me crazy. Would appreciate help.
