I have to have transparent backgrounds on most of the artwork i work on.
Often, I presume with lower quality images, I get a thin white border around almost the entire image (.png)
Is there a fairly strait forward way to remove this white thin line from around images?

It would help if you post a representative image for us to look at. You can do that via the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the reply box here on the forum. You can not do it via an e-mail reply, however.

Thank you. I couldn't find it at first. Here is an example

No white edges seen here. Could it be the site you are uploading to?

When I open it in Elements, remove the white background to make it transparent, it seems to retain a fuzzy white edge around the man, and the lettering is very unclear.

Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.

It could be that your selection is not precise. Try using refine edge. Or try careful use of background eraser keeping the + sign in the white area.
