Now in Beta: Support for Nikon N-RAW

Adobe Employee ,

We’re excited to announce that support for Nikon’s N-RAW format is now in beta for Premiere Pro, as well as After Effects, Media Encoder, and Audition. Support for N-RAW was added via the RED SDK, which means that customers will modify N-RAW settings via Effect Controls > RED Source Settings.

Support for N-RAW, including hardware acceleration, is available on Apple silicon computers and Windows computers with CUDA and OpenCL support. N-RAW will not be supported on Macintosh Intel computers.

We’ve love to get your feedback on this update!

Anyone got any workflow suggestions? Red Source Settings are a bit different.

@AlleymanStudio Red Source Settings should behave very much like Red Source Settings. Is there a particular difference you can point me to? I'd like to make sure that any differences you might be encountering aren't actually bugs on our side that we need to investigate.

I’ve never used any Red editing. Just Nikon.

@AlleymanStudio We're working with Nikon on an updated tutorial for handling N-RAW files in Premiere Pro. Almost any information you can find on forums & YouTube related to handling RED R3D files in Premiere Pro is already applicable to N-RAW files.

You should get good results with this very simple workflow:

  1. Import N-RAW files into Premiere Pro and make no changes in RED Source Settings.
  2. Got to Lumetri Color > Settings.
  3. In Preferences, check Display Color Management and, if you're on a Mac, Extended Dynamic Range Monitoring
  4. In Project, check Color Manage Auto Detected Log and Raw Media and Enable Color Space Aware Effects

By doing this, Premiere Pro will do a color space transform of the color space of your media into the color space of your project. In short, your media should look good, without having to apply a LUT. For even better results - particularly if you're modifying the imagine in Lumetri Color > Edit and you've got areas of bright highlights - under Lumetri Color > Settings > Sequence, choose Wide Gamut (Tone Mapped).

There's lots more information about Premiere Pro's new color magement system here: https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere/desktop/correct-color/set-up-color-management/about-color-managemen...

Regards,

Fergus
