Window layout not loading properly

After the update to the latest version, the windows layout not loading properly. I tried to reset the layout and remake it again, but each time I open Designer, I'm getting the wrong layout, like in the image:

Hi!

 

Thank you for reporting this issue! Please share your log file so we can investigate this problem.

 

To export a log file:

  • Open the Help menu
  • Select the Export Log File... option
  • Select a destination folder and click Save

Then, you may attach the exported file to a reply in this thread.

 

Please note the log file contains some information about your system (hardware, some project file path, OS, drivers...). Let me know if you are uncomfortable with sharing this information on a public board.

Hello,

 

I performed additional tests and am unable to reproduce this issue at all. However we experienced this issue a few times on other systems, with no consistent reproduction scenario. Considering you can reproduce it consistently, I would like to take a look at the stored values for the interface layout, which are in the Windows' registry.

 

Please share your system's registry values for Substance 3D Designer. To do this, please take the following steps:

 

  • Press the Windows key, type Registry Editor, then start the suggested application with that name
  • In the address bar, input the following path: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Allegorithmic\Substance Designer
  • In the left panel, right-click the Substance Designer folder and select the Export option
  • Input any name in the File name field, set the *.txt file type in the Save as type field, and click Save
  • To not disclose your personal information related to Substance 3D Designer (recent files, licences, etc.), you may send me the exported text file in a direct message
  • Delete the Substance Designer folder mentioned above from the Registry Editor
  • Start Substance 3D Designer
  • Arrange your interface layout as desired
  • Close and start Substance 3D Designer again

 

Please let me know the results in addition to sending me the text file containing the registry extract.

I did what you said and sent you a direct message.

Deletion of registry values didn't help. The deletion of the third-party plugins (like Substance Designer Live Link) also didn't help.

This issue happens on my main PC and on my notebook (so it does not happen only on a single computer).

Hello,

 

I am able to consistently reproduce the issue by following these steps:

 

  1. Open the Windows menu and select the Reset Layout option
  2. Close Substance 3D Designer
  3. Open Substance 3D Designer
  4. Move the 3D View panel into the Explorer panel so it merges as a tab
  5. Close Substance 3D Designer
  6. Open Substance 3D Designer

 

The issue can also be triggered by moving any panel onto any other as a tab, as long as the tabs are placed along the left border of the main window.

 

Our engineers will investigate further and try to implement a reliable fix. I will update you in this thread when we have further developments.

It works now, thanks.
Still not fully happy about it since I struggled with this issue for 3 months. I know that my word won't change anything, but it would be great if you will be able to publish small hotfixes separately from bigger updates which you release a couple of times per year.

Thanks for your feedback and your patience. We changed the release process and that's true, it's now longer than before as several teams are involved internally (development, localisation, documentation, test, etc.). And I fully understand that in your case, it's really painfull to struggle with an issue that you know is already fixed internally. With this process, we will improve the quality of releases and avoid critical issues, lack of documentation, missing translation, etc. 

We continue to have major, minor and bugfix versions, but yes, time between them is affected by this process. We will continue to do our best and improve quality of releases in order to avoid to introduce bugs like this one, and in parallel of that, try to improve this new workflow in order to keep flexibility.
