Create simple material that can be saved and re-used in Stager

This is probably a simple issue to resolve, but I am not sure what to do: I need to make 100+ renders of blister-card packaging concepts (similar to collectable toy action figures).   All of them need to have the same clear translucent material for the blisters. I know how to edit the material in Stager to get the look I need, but Stager does not allow the saving of materials. Remaking the same material 100+ times isn't going to work, but I can not figure out how to remake the same basic material in any of the other Substance programs, and save them somewhere that is accessible in Stager.

This is my process in Stager:

1. Import the OBJ file to Stager

2. Add the "Default .mdl" material to the model

3. Adjust the Roughness down to 0.03

4. In the Interior section, I change the Translucency to 0.99, and add a slight bluish tint.

-and thats it. Done. I learned how to do that in this video from the Adobe Substance YouTube channel.:

(starts at 5min) "Advanced Material Rendering - Translucency | Substance 3D"

But I can not figure out how to make the same basic material in Painter, or in Designer. I am sure there is a simple way, but I can't find the right documentation or video. The base “Default .mdl” material isn’t available in Painter, and the Interior / Translucency options are different, and associated with a lot more options and paramenters.

I have tried editing several Standard and Smart materials in Painter but just can’t get a decent simple shiny transparent looking plastic.

I am more than impressed with the options for creating amazing materials and more in the Substance workspace. But the learning curve for Designer and Painter is steep, especially for my basic needs, and I am looking for a simple quick solution.

I used to do all this in Keyshot. I subscribed to the Substance suite when my Keyshot license expired. I assumed that setting up renders and editing materials in Stager would be as intuitive and efficient as it was in Keyshot. I guess I don’t understand the workflow. Designer > Painter > AdobeLibraries > Stager?

Can anyone point me to a simple and concise video or documentation that explains how to edit just 3 parameters of the "Default .mdl" material and save it to a library that is accessible in Stager? If not that, maybe a place to download that material?

Nodes, Chanels, Textures and UV Baking and Unwrapping are all really cool, but so is a simple clear plastic looking material that can be plopped on any shape and just looks "good enough".

-for me anyway.

HELP! and Thanks!

Not sure but maybe this can help you: Importing MDl into Stager, After importing you will be able to find it materials panels.

Hello @bfuzz,

If you're sending your work from Painter, I advise you to export it with the same material parameters. Don't worry, the differences you see between Painter and Stager are simply due to different engines. Once the work is exported, it should look the same.

To add the Transluency and Absorption, go to Texture set settings > Channels and add Transluency and Absorption.

If you want to display the Channels properly in your 3D viewport, go to your Shader settings, and enable Transluency and Absorption.

Enable transluency shader.png

You can now set in a layer the same value you had in Stager (Transluency: 0.99, Absorption: bluish).

Send it to Stager, and you'll see the result will be similar as what you previously had.

Regards,
