I joined bsky.app a few days ago, and I'm so glad I did. It's lovely, a breath of fresh air.
I, along with millions of other users, got fed up with the ketamine-laced lunatic platform formerly known as Twitter.
Bluesky is #1 app on Google Play and #2 in Apple's App Store. And there's good reason for it. Here's some cool stuff you can do on Bluesky.

Hope to see you there.

I'll stick with X formerly known as Twitter 😊, the butterfly logo puts me off!
I guess the recent change in the US election has made a difference. 🤔

Many seem to agree with you. Apparently BlueSky, or as some say, BS, censors dissenting views like the old Twitter did. Babylon Bee did some posts there, and all were declared "Mean" etc haha. And to think so many of them say they went there for "freedom of speech." X is where freedom of speech is, it's just speech they don't like. Twitter used to be predominately Democrat, partially because they kept deplatforming and silencing conservatives, but now it's about half and half. Because Musk doesn't do that. The Democrats who left did so because it was so shocking to them to see opinions that didn't match theirs. They weren't used to it. From CNN, the numbers:

When you've become comfortably numb to toxic air pollution, that first breath of fresh air feels really strange until you realize that's what real air is supposed to feel like -- clean & safe to breathe.
The engagement on BlueSky has surpassed my expectations. In 1 week, I have more BlueSky followers than I did after years on Twitter. Many are familiar faces, and quite a few are new ones. Each of us have varied interests & points of view, but one common thread unites us. We are deeply committed to keeping BlueSky a toxic-free zone, sans of trolling copycats, foreign bots & unwanted ads for s*x products. If that appeals to you, fine. If not, then by all means stay on the other side.

It's curious how the tables have turned with Twitter/X. The shoe is on the other foot!
So, does this mean that Bluesky and X are now political? Those who are liberal will go to Bluesky, and those who are conservative will be on X.
What kind of world are we living in?
Bluesky might get popular for a while, but because it is open to anybody, it's impossible to keep it 'pure' unless censorship is installed. (Or as Elon says, 'a digital chastity belt' - interview with Don Lemon.)
Welcome 1984! Truth is stranger than fiction.

They already DO have censorship over there, just like they had at Twitter.

He is not "censoring." The clearly stated policy at X is to do this on posts that contain external links, and everyone knows it and acts accordingly. It is to encourage users to remain on the platform and to contain possibly malignant links. It is not censorship and not at all what Dorsey was doing.

Ask yourself why Twitter put the kibosh on content from Facebook & other "prohibited" media sources but gives carteblanche to content on TikTok. It couldn't possibly be because Twitter's owner is at war with Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and others.
<sarcasm> Surely he's not THAT petty. </sarcasm> 😶

As I said before, what he's actually doing is impeding the use of external links, which is stated he will do, and there are good reasons. So. Read the sentence I just wrote, which is factual. Then take a look at the media you quote. They are all reporting it deceptively. They took a legitimate policy of restricting external links (Instagram has a similar policy too) and turn it into "Musk blocks..." and "Musk bans" etc. Doesn't that bother you? I swear if Trump said "It's raining cats and dogs," they'd say "Trump thinks dogs and cats are falling from the skyyyyy!!!!! He's unFIT!!!!"

Mediaite is left-wing, so that explains everything. The media these days are extremely biased - even the UK -The Guardian - is far left!
Although...
Media Bias Fact Check says:
" They often publish factual information that utilizes loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes) to favor progressive/liberal causes."
Mediaite - Bias and Credibility - Media Bias/Fact Check
The use of language can be very manipulative! And very effective...therefore:
The media these days = The Ministry of Truth. 😁

Much like old Twitter, Bluesky doesn't foster hate-speech & misinformation. Nor does it ban users for posting links to outside sources. Moderation has been great so far. Obviously they're doing something right because they're attracting 10K new users every 15 minutes.
Bluesky is growing so fast it's racing to get hold of more servers
https://www.businessinsider.com/bluesky-user-growth-social-coo-servers-twitter-elon-musk-x-2024-11
Pinning feeds ensures you'll see what interests you -- whether it's Cat Pics, Astronomy or What's Hot in Human Generated Art.
Starter Packs are a labor-saving way to follow familiar faces. And anyone can create their own Starter Packs for new friends to follow.
Will there be growing pains? Undoubtedly. Bluesky's 20-person team is in "firefighting mode" to keep up with demand and ensure that users continue to have a good experience. The company plans to launch a paid subscription model by the end of this year.

We'll have to educate Adobe about interest in Bluesky.

Legend! @Nancy OShea that is exactly the kind of links / info I was after. I will do so promptly. Thank you!
I am an international scientist and have very little investment in US politics. But Xitter used to be the place-to-be for scientific networking. As professional scientists all the people Ive spoken to value open access and transparency over a privately owned platform with a clear agenda. Most of us stopped using X as soon as the name changed pretty much but are now leveraging this time to finally convince others to join us on bluesky 🙂
I also tried Mastodon but only the committed internet nerds made it over there. We needed a convincing movement and now we have one!

OH ok haha and Twitter/Dorsey didn't have an "agenda"!? Ha! They suppressed Covid info that has now turned out to be valid and true. And worse. Good grief you guys.

Since joining Bluesky, I rarely visit Twitter. It's more out of obligation than enjoyment. A bit like investigating a mold problem in the basement, except that mold is more interesting. 😄

Leslie, you're clearly looking for a twitter argument space and are trying to impliment that here. Bluesky is open access. So is Mastodon. So I'm talking algorithm and coding, not content. Not interested in engaging in anything else. Thanks!

Over time, Bluesky will no doubt follow suit- to become a 'toxic' environment - because it is open access, it is open to everyone, as X is.
People will give their opinions - because we all like to give opinions - but over time there will be opinions that go against the tide; those who go against the tide will be labelled 'toxic'. (Because apparently, X is now 'toxic'.)
Bluesky may indeed be a breath of fresh air, but over time it will most probably become 'toxic'.
Social media is open to good apples and bad apples, and that's the way it is.
However...
The only way to keep it 'pure' is censorship, limit the use of language, and for the dissenters, to 'reeducate' them so that they now follow the narrative - as Winston found out. He was a 'dissenter, who went against the tide, but soon discovered that it was impossible, and after being 're-educated ' ended up believing the mainstream narrative.
By the way, what is the clear agender of X? It was supposed to be a public square, wasn't it?

Open access ≠ no censorship
Much like Leslie, you are also misunderstanding my comments, wich are not concerning the content on the platform or censorship. I am not interested in that discussion. There is plenty of information on blueskys open access framework. X is a privately owned company with no transparency regarding the code and algorithm used to create the platform. That is the key difference to us.
