Fireworks are banned in the city where I live

We had 3 fires encroaching on our home today, all within a few hours of each other.  I suspect a local fire bug or some kids playing with fireworks.

Swift action by county FD crews and helicopters with Phos-Chek, averted a disaster.

I'm a little nervous about tomorrow.

A few years ago, before fireworks were banned, several grass/brush fires were started by careless use of fireworks

In spite of that people still go out in the county to buy fireworks and cause fires... it has been warm-to-hot here for a week or so, and the 4th is supposed to be 92 so I'm sure every fire station is making sure they are ready

Had a nervous night with a 2 acre brush fire allegedly caused by fireworks. It was along a road in the remote hills, so easy to get to and they had it under control in a few hours.

I read that some store owners in California report having shoplifters with calculators to make sure they stay under that amount. Unbelievable.

-Edit- I also read that the sign above was placed by someone other than the city officials. Still, it's true though that they came up with this amount.

A social media prank. A fake sign in downtown San Francisco was not an official sign.  Whoever put it up let it go viral and then took it down.

The difference between grand theft & petty theft is a decade-old law.

Yes, as I said, the sign was not placed by officials, but:

According to California law, shoplifting is considered a misdemeanor if the value of the stolen property is $950 or less. This means that if the value of the stolen goods is below this threshold, the perpetrator will typically face lighter penalties, such as fines, probation, or short jail sentences.

Key Points:

• The property must be worth $950 or less.
• It cannot be a firearm or an automobile.
• Petty Theft also does not require the use of fear or force.
• You must move the property and keep it for some period.

Everything has gone up, from 1st time DUI to small claims court damages $5K.

Petty theft is a 'wobbler.'  If there's petty theft with priors, it gets bumped up from a misdemeanor to a felony.

So it's not entirely based on value.
