Another font issue with Win10(1803) creator updade (cannot print from MS WORD 2016)

Following the installation of the infamous Win10(1803) creator update Is was no longer able to print certain documents from MS WORD 2016 (win 64)

Problematic documents were spooling an abnormal 1.26kb file automatically deleted and not getting to the printer.  After trying to unsuccessfully troubleshoot the usual suspects (drivers , spooling etc)  I narrowed the issue the issue down to the fonts ! : As soon as I use,  Adobe Caslon Pro font  (among others) printing would fail.

=> saving to pdf and then printing from adobe acrobat  WORKS

=> reverting to ms word 2013 & keeping Win10(1803)   WORKS

=> reverting to previous windows version Win10(17xx)    WORKS

=> uninstalling and re installing the font manually (via install font)  DOES NOT WORK

=> using different printers or drivers (XEROX or HP) DOES NOT WORK

Suggestions or help welcome

Known bug in Windows 10 v1803. Printing using Type 4 printer drivers fails when any OpenType CFF font is used in you document.

Microsoft is aware of the problem and working on releasing a fix on some upcoming Patch Tuesday.

The workaround is to create PDF with all fonts embedded (that doesn't work with Microsoft's own “Save as PDF” but does with Acrobat's PDFMaker in Office) and then print the PDF.

How sure is everyone that this CFF font problem is confined uniquely to "Type 4" printer drivers? I have seen a report on a forum elsewhere that the same symptoms (printing fails when CFF fonts are involved after 1803 update) have been observed when the active printer driver was listed as "Type 3". So might it be possible that certain Type 3 drivers are affected, as well as all Type 4?

My response was based on (1) information received directly from Microsoft's printer driver Program Manager and (2) some extensive testing at Adobe.

Is it possible that there are some other bugs in Windows?

Please provide more information, possibly via private message on this forum. Application? Printer model? Driver version? And maybe a sample document? A vague reference to “a report on a forum elsewhere” won't assist in identifying or fixing whatever problem there is.

Application? Printer model? Driver version?

The user states the printer to be an HP Office Jet Pro 8625. The application is Avid "Sibelius Ultimate", for which all shipping fonts are OpenType with CFF outlines. The problem is not document-specific: any score exhibits the same printing failure. The user states he is able to print from MS Word, but not from Sibelius, and can print from Sibelius using the export-to-PDF work-around. The other forum thread can be read at:

Don't even begin to look for a fix from Microsoft until the last week of July. Again, nothing that Adobe can do about this.

I installed the HP Universal Print Driver which is a Type 3 driver and it solved the problem.

This printing issue was apparently fixed by Windows Update KB4340917 released on 2018 July 24.

Thanks for confirming this. That update is now rolling out slowly to Windows 10 version 1803 users.
