You haven't provided enough information about your application's specific requirements to determine "which is better". Neither option is, by default, better than the other. Application and session variables tend to perform better, since they're in memory, but they consume memory (surprise!) and won't survive a server failure or restart. My mistake, I should have listed port 8500. That's the default port when using the "standalone" installer. Port 8300 is used with the full JRun install, which is what I usually use. "ilssac" is right - if you follow all the defaults he lists, your scripts should work. If not, check the permissions on the /opt/coldfusion9/wwwroot folder. If you didn't configure CF to use Apache, it's using the built-in JRun web server. By default, that listens on localhost:8300, so you should be able to access the CF Administrator by going to http://localhost:8300/cfide/administrator/. Your web root should be /opt/coldfusion9/wwwroot. Put your pages there rather than /home/forrest/workspace/Learning/. Hey, Leon! I don't think you'll find much on the Adobe site for Solr, but since it's an open-source product you can reference the Solr documentation and wiki. But if they're really working with that many documents, they might want to consider an enterprise-class search solution like the Google Search Appliance: http://www.google.com/enterprise/gsa/index.html I work with that a lot, and think it's a much better solution than Solr or Verity for a variety of reasons. It isn't cheap, but it's a good dedicated solution and it can easily be integrated with CF applications. A few Google searches for products should disabuse him of that notion. Google does just find indexing pages that don't have them. That said, they probably do make some difference, even if it's not a significant one, so if he wants them you can include them. But in any case I'd recommend using the primary key in addition, and actually using that for your lookups. It'll work a little better, and will allow you to have duplicate item names and brand names if any exist. The way to fix this is to stop using the undocumented functions that aren't guaranteed to work in future versions, and use the documented API provided by Adobe for this reason. The way we used to solve this sort of thing in the old days was to use RTF. You can use Word to create an RTF file which will essentially have the same layouts as a native DOC file. But RTF is just text, so you could open that RTF file in Notepad and make the right changes. Unfortunately, that's kind of a royal pain to work with, but life was hard in the old days. Nowadays, you might find it easier to use a Java library like POI: http://poi.apache.org/hwpf/quick-guide.html I haven't actually used POI with Word documents, but before we got CFSPREADSHEET it was common to use this with Excel.
