batcher2, The catalog will retain the Lr adjustments but the PS adjustments are NOT in the catalog; they are in the image file (=in the image pixels). Lr reads the image pixels and displays the image according to the (PS edited) image pixels until you tell Lr to override the display with the Lr edits that are stored in the catalog. Since the PS edits are displayed in Lr they will also be printed; once you tell Lr to override the PS edits with different Lr edits, the image will be displayed and printed with the Lr edits. BUT when you go back in the history palette to the state of the image as it came out of PS, you can print with the PS edits.

If you google "ctrl + z not working" a lot of stuff comes up where this stopped working in various programs. Also, ctrl. + z works (if it does) across many programs and in Windows itself. From this I conclude that it is possibly / probably a Windows problem, not a Lr problem. All of you who report that ctrl + z doesn't work in Lr do a simple test: does it work in other programs? It would be a Lr problem only if it works everywhere but not in Lr.

What do you mean by "catalogues" ? In Lr speak the "catalog" is the data base where Lr stores / saves everything you do in Lr. Or do you mean images? Single images or a group of selected images are removed from Lr by right-clicking and selecting <Delete Photo>. You are then given the choice of <Deleting from disk> which sends your image(s) to the Recycle Bin / Trash Can or of <Remove> which removes the image from Lr but leaves it on the hard drive wherever it is right now. You also can remove folders from Lr by right-clicking them and selecting <Remove>. When you are in a Collection you can only remove an image from the collection; you have to go to the folder first to do the above mentioned things.

So when you did Ctrl + Z the preset "Vintage People" (I hope I read that correctly - the letters in the History panel were a bit small) was applied? I have no idea why that would be so. Have you closed Lr and tried again? If it persists you might want to look into replacing the Lr preference file. The preference file can go "funny" - for resons unknown - and then is responsible for all kinds of "buggy and weird" behavior of Lr. Replacing the preference file takes about 5 mins. Ctrl + Z undoes the last step. If the step before had a preset applied, then that's what you get with Ctrl + Z.

It is a CMYK profile. You can use it for softproofing in Photoshop because Photoshop works with CMYK profiles and lets you softproof them. But you can't get Lr to display it or work with it. Even if you install it and it works in Photoshop it doesn't show in Lr. I used it for softproofing a book in Photoshop and the results of the printed book were very good, practically identical to what I got on my own printer. The softproofing in Photoshop is slow and tedious, since you have to load every image into Photoshop and softproof it. But in my opinion it's well worth the effort.

david, Photos are not "in" Lr in any way. Photos are on your hard drive and Lr links to them. Since Lr is not a browser based program, i.e. it does not automatically "see" what is on your hard drive, you cannot use Lr to find the photos in your case. You have to use Mac Finder to find the photos. If Mac Finder cannot find them then the sad conclusion is that they are gone for good. If Mac Finder finds them, note down the exact location where they are. Or, if you want, move the photos via Mac Finder to a new location, and note that location. Then open Lr and re-link Lr to the photos. See here how the re-linking is done: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm PS: Actually, since the photos have been removed from Lr, the re-linking won't work. You have to do the <Synchronize folder> for re-importing these photos into Lr. Synchronize folder will work only if you have found /moved the photos in a folder that is being displayed in Lr already. If you have found / moved the photos in a folder that's not displayed in Lr, you have to import them and navigate to the folder in question in the Source panel (left side0 of the Import dialog. Open your Recycle Bin / Trash Can. You will see a list of all files that are in the trash. Highlight the ones you want to recover ( you can use Ctrl + click to select several files) and - still in the Recycle Bin go >File >Restore. This is in Windows; it might be somewhat different on a Mac but the principle should be the same. <Restore> puts the files back into the folder where they were before you trashed them. After <Restore> your images will not be automatically displayed in Lr, since by sending them to the Recycle Bin they also were removed from the catalog. You have to do a <Synchronize folder> to re-import them into Lr. Also, since the images were removed from the catalog, your images will have lost all edits that you made previously in Lr.

It's in the Crop Tool (Develop Module) where you entered the dimensions. When you click on the double arrows besides the padlock, in the fly-out menu about 2/3 down there is <Enter Custom>. Just enter your desired pixel numbers there. Naturally this is cropping, i.e. cutting away parts of an image. If you want to resize the image without cutting away parts of it you have to do that in the Export dialog.

If you want to upload a photo for a website, you need to create a JPG. This is done by exporting, and the Export Dialog gives you several options for resizing an image. One option is to enter the pixel dimensions directly. If you want to change the aspect ratio of your photo you have to crop it first in the Develop Module. In the Crop Tool enter the pixel dimensions you want under <Enter Custom>. You can just enter pixel numbers there, like for instance 1345 x 2345, or whatever.

Yeah, I did a short test and it seems that the presets are still available even if you send them to the recycle bin. Hmmm.... And strangely, it is different with user-generated presets. They are not available if they are not in the right folder.

Go to >Edit >Preferences >Presets tab and click on <Show Lightroom Presets folder>. Make sure that <Store presets with catalog> is unchecked. Open this Lr presets folder - it is called <Lightroom>, then open <Develop Presets> and then <Lr Presets>. There you will see all the default Lr presets. Just highlight the ones you want to delete and press <Delete> - this will send these presets to the recycle bin. Alternatively move them to a different folder of your choice where Lr does not find them, in case you want them later on again.

If you are not concerned about loosing edits the transition to Lr is pretty straightforward. In your OS organize your photos to your liking, and - that is my suggestion - all under one (1) parent folder. Or, if your photos are on different drives, then each drive should have one (1) parent folder for photos. Then download and install Lr. It would be best, if you'd watch some of the tutorials on Adobe's website: http://tv.adobe.com/product/lightroom/ http://tv.adobe.com/show/adobe-evangelists-julieanne-kost/ http://tv.adobe.com/show/learn-lightroom-3/ Then import your photos in Lr. You probably know already that for Lr no photo exists unless it has been imported. Lr stores/saves everything in its catalog; so the catalog is THE all-important file. Don't even think of having more than one catalog; if you do you will almost certainly end up in grief and trouble. More than one catalog is for the experienced Lr user only. And if you have more questions, this forum is the place to ask.

ashleykaryl, It should not make a difference in the speed of Lr if you have the catalog on the same drive where your photos are. But if this is by any chance an external USB drive, then you'd better put the catalog on an internal drive even if you have only one. The USB connection is too slow and the catalog is constantly written to and read from, so there's quite a bit of traffic. Thus, while is helps to put the catalog on a different drive than where the OS and Lr reside, it is more important that the catalog is on a drive with a fast connection. For external drives that means only eSata drive would be fast enough for the catalog.

An image has a certain pixel dimension, let's say 2000 x 3000. If you print this at a size of 6.66" x 10" you get a resolution of 300 ppi/dpi . If you print a size of 10" x 15" you get a resolution of 200 ppi/dpi. That means the resolution in ppi/dpi is the result of the calculation of total pixel dimension divided by desired output size. Thus ppi/dpi is always dependant on your desired output size and is not "native" to an image. Native to an image is only the pixel dimension that is determined by your camera's sensor.

You are absolutely correct in that BUT you are not saving the Lr edits in the source file by exporting. Exporting creates a new image file with the Lr edits written into it, but the source file remains as it was before. The OP wanted that the Lr edits are written into the image pixels of the original image file.

kend99, Which version of Lr are you using? Becausein Lr 3.6 this "glaring bug" has been fixed. Also, in retrospect I have to say he following: I am now using Lr 3.6 64-bit, and have 12 GB of Ram. And now the dust spot removal is blazingly fast. So my verdict is: this was never a bug in the strict sense but the dust spot removal required lots of RAM and processor power. On systems with "only" 2 processors and 4 GB of RAM or less the system was just overburdened. WW

Papa Ben, I respect what you are saying. But let me tell you that Lightroom forced all (or most) of us to rethink our workflow and change it. We had workflows that were based on programs that are different from LR (mine was based on Adobe Bridge) and we had to adjust to working the way LR wants us to work. Why? Because LR is a formidable and fine program that is appreciated by many professionals who do not want to miss out on the feature that LR offers. So we changed our workflow. And looking back - it was for the better. I have read posts by some beginners in LR who say I don't like this or that, and if that's not possible, I'm not using LR. That is absolutely fine. If you think LR is not for you. Fine. But you miss out on a very capable and professional program. WW

The catalog preserves previous edits in the history in Develop Module (left panel). All what you did in the Develop Module is listed in chronological order and you just click on any of the previous states listed in the history panel and you are back to that state. Also you can take snapshots of important steps in the editing process. But the hitory is strictly only for steps you take in the editing process. If - for instance - you`d change the caption of an image several times, there is no way to go back to the first caption - unless you remember it and can do it manually. WW

Also: If the image files are JPGs it is not a good idea to save / store edits in the original image file. JPG uses a "lossy" compression; that means that by compressing the image file to a smaller size on disk, JPG throws away image information that is lost forever. By subsequest savings more image data is being thrown away to the effect that image quality degrades with each saving of the original file. You save your JPG the first time when you bring it from camera (or card reader) to your hard drive. Then you edit it and save again. Then you don't like the first edits. edit it again and save again. This is not a good procedure for JPGs. If your camera creates JPGs you'd be much better off with LR that saves edits in the catalog and does not touch your JPG so that it is saved only once - when you bring it into the computer. WW

Papa Ben, LR stores everything you do in its catalog. The word "catalog" in LR--speak denotes not your images but the data base where LR stores everything. This data base (the catalog) is a file with the ending < .lrcat> and you can see where it is located by going to >Edit >Catalog Settings >General tab. This storing or saving to the catalog is happening constantly and automatically and you do not have to hit a <save> button. Stored or saved in the catalog are your edits and everything regarding image management (including location of your image files), captions, keywords, etc. For this reason it is all-important that you preserve and protect your LR catalog just as you have to preserve and protect your image files. That means you (a) should know the location of the catalog and (b) you should do back-ups regularly. Without the catalog you would still have your image files but your edits and all what you did in LR would be lost. LR does not write into the original image file. But there is the possibility to save edits in a xmp-file which is a small file that (normally) sits besides the image file. You do this saving to xmp-file either in the Library Module by going >Metadata > Save Metadata to file (or shortcut Ctrl./Cmd. + letter "S"), or in the Develop Module by going >Photo >Save Metadata to file - or again Ctr. + S. With DNGs it's a bit different; with DNGs Lr writes the edits into the header of the file. But the procedure is the same. Saving to XMP (or into the header of a DNG) is not necessary because LR saves everything in its catalog - automatically. Saving to XMP (or into the DNG-header) has the effect that the edits you do in LR are now visible in any other Adobe program that can read XMP-files (or DNG files) - for instance Adobe Bridge. But for LR it is not necessary. And there is one caveat: While LR saves everything in the catalog, not all the things you do in LR are written into XMP é DNG. So only the LR catalog saves everything you did in LR. To answer your question: You do not have to save the edited version of a photo back into the original file. LR saves your edits in the catalog automatically and will display your edits because it reads the original image file and then applies the edits to it for display. WW
