Within the OCR option that Bernd mentions, you should have the choice of a searchable PDF or ClearScan. The searchable will not change the look, but puts a text layer behind the picture so you can search it. Of course, a lot depends on the quality of the OCR as to the ability to do a reasonable search. The ClearScan actually replaces the image text with actual text to view, again that may have conversion errors.

Just to clarify, there are 3 methods of creating a PDF in WORD 2010. You can use the Save As PDF or XPS (this is the MS built-in converter), Save As Adobe PDF (equivalent to the Acrobat menu of create PDF that is the PDF Maker application), and print to the Adobe PDF printer (different from PDF Maker). I assume you are using AA XI. I just did a test on WORD 2007 and AA 8 (what I have on this machine - might try other combinations later) and did not see a difference. There may indeed be a difference between 8 and XI (or DC), but I will have to check that a bit later.

The link at Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs indicates it will clean up 10.x and later (mentioning 11.x). Whether it works for DC is a different issue, but you have XI. The typical problems are sometimes resolved by logging in as the Administrator and disabling anti-virus. In one case (not normal), I actually had to activate the Administrator account and use that to do the install. My regular account with administrator privileges would not do the job. That used to be the norm with older versions, but is typically not the issue today. It may still be worth the effort. Here is a link on the activation: Enable the (Hidden) Administrator Account on Windows 7, 8, or Vista. The link also indicates you normally should not use this account on a daily basis.

A key in Dov's comment is the upgrade issue (not sure about plugins, but they would not be in the proper folder in any case and would probably have to be reinstalled). If you are not using an upgrade, then I think you should be offered the option to ignore the uninstall and keep the old one. However, don't expect the old version to run seamlessly. One reason many folks like to keep the old version around is that they created forms in Designer and DC does not support Designer which is now a separate product. As Dov indicates, the old version may continue to operate is some manner if left on the system, but expect problems with that version. If you did an upgrade, don't expect the old version to be left since the idea of an upgrade is to replace the old version.

Sounds like you might want to export the PDF to WORD and insert it instead of trying to view the PDF itself. When you do that there are options (settings on the save page) that make a difference in the conversion WRT layout and text flow, etc.

Sometimes, running a repair on Acrobat will resolve such issues. That along with activating the plugin in WORD. It may be you have inadvertently blocked some plugins in WORD.

If you check the image properties in WORD you should be able to see the % size compared to the original. A lot may depend on the resolution of the picture. If it is rather low resolution, then the process of the software try to do the interpolation to display at other than 100% or maybe 50% may have mixed results. The 94% I am showing above is not necessarily a good idea. This was a selection from a students MS thesis.

Word is probably viewing the PDF as an image. Is the resolution maintained to be a simple ratio, or a like 69% or such.

Basically there is not a find and replace in Acrobat. You have to find, type the replacement, and continue as mentioned. For what you want to do, it is generally recommended you go back to the original document for the change and create a new PDF.

I might try checking my AA 8 tomorrow. I can't use AA 9 right now and so I would have to check 8 that is similar. XI has a totally different menu structure and would not help. Otherwise, wait until someone else gets back to you. Folks are not checking posts every hour or so, but it might be every other day. We are just users and get around to checking things when it is convenient for us.

Just as a try, you might open the file in an older version of Acrobat and see if you can print to a new PDF. I suspect it will not help, but there is an outside chance it will clean up the font. If so, then you might be able to fix the old files that way and then use them. Just a wild thought, though I really don't have much hope.

You might try downloading the install file from http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html. If that does the job, then please backup the file for future needs (to CD or backup HD).

Flattening by printing to the Adobe PDF printer will do the job, but will delete all bookmarks and related items. There are also issues with graphics that have been mentioned by the Adobe folks in the past, though my eyes have never really observed a difference. Usually, refrying (printing to PDF) is not recommended by Adobe. I will admit that I do it, but I generally am aware of what I might expect.

I am one of those folks that has my e-mail package set to not display pictures. I click on them for the display if I wish. So I agree with TSN to let folks know there is a graphic message. If you ask why I have this turned off, it is an issue with the viruses that can be embedded in graphics.

You mentioned the print function, but the combine feature you mention does not use the print functionality, but PDF Maker. Try creating the PDF from WORD using the Acrobat menu. Does that give the proper result. If not, you may have the settings messed up in the converter. You might also want to check the options for DOC to PDF in the Edit>Preference (to PDF) options. You mention the latest update of XI that should give you 11.0.09.

Sounds like you got it working. Congrats! Older products often come up with some problems that we can only try to help with, but Adobe no longer offers any support. Our suggestions try to offer suggestions and feedback is worth a lot to see if we actually are helpful in any way. My guess is you have Reader 11.1, not Acrobat. If you have Acrobat 11.0.09 the printer should automatically be installed. Reader does not include the print driver, the latter simply being a PS printer driver. To get PDFs you also need Distiller that is part of the Acrobat release.

You can delete the cropped area by using the Private tool (or what ever it is called in your version) and select the remove hidden areas. The Reduce File Size used to do this, but no longer. Now you have to do it through this other method. I think that may make the 8.5X11 the new page size.

As far as the menu structure and such, Adobe does have a logic -- but it does not seem to jive with the views of many users that don't like the retraining required with all the changes. It took me over a year to discover that I could delete the cropped portions of a file permanently with the private/protect features that allow removal of hidden information. I tend to be one of those who complains about the changes. They are well known for changing the location of menu items with each version. In terms of trying to help with the reduction issue, if either of you (or both) could post an example some place (like acrobat.com or dropbox.com) to share, we can take a look. Let us know your expectations and such. We may not be able to help that much, but we will all be working on the same page. Some of us may also be able to try the reduction features on previous versions we still have installed on other machines. Be sure to redact any private information or just post an example that demonstrates the problem and is no problem to share.
