UPDATE TO OLD THREAD! This one was started in April of 2009, as you can see. In honor of last weekend's Jive software upgrade, I just took a stroll through this old rant tome to see where we've been and where we've come.  It's good to be able to say, we've come a long way, baby.  Some who've enjoyed being a part of the Audition community for several years or more might still think that improvements haven't yet gone far enough to support the community experience at the level where it's been in the past.  However, I believe that for most users, the bulk of the inconveniences have disappeared and things are working decently.  The majority of the gripes in the many posts of this thread have actually, over a period of time, been resolved. Here are some remaining deficiencies, thankfully a reasonably short list: We still miss the formidable contributions of OzPeter, and wish him very well at whatever else he's devoted his time to. The debacle involving FAQs has been mitigated somewhat by Steve G's efforts to port some essentials into that area.  Thank you, Steve!  The full archive, and huge amounts of information concerning legacy versions of the software, are still available at the Audiomasters Forum. Software: the forum software no longer appears to support the attachment of files beyond a photo or video clip.  Am I seeing this correctly?  If so, that needs to be corrected. Software: inserting the link above is automatically defaulted to displaying the full link with no option to alter the display text.  A workaround is to use the advanced editor mode (you can see I successfully changed it).  But this should be available in the initial popup box. Software: efficiency has definitely improved, but these pages are still resource hogs.  Thankfully I no longer have to use the old computer that nearly croaked over this forum 2 1/2 years ago -- but that hardware only changed last December!  Is this Java-based platform efficient?  Well, right now I've got a slew of tabs open in IE, and Windows Task Manager shows 10 different ieexplore.exe processes, all of which have a rising quantity of memory usage, presently from 103MB up to 175MB.  That's a total of 1.1GB of memory!!!  This tab I'm presently typing in still places a small continuous CPU load even when not typing or doing anything.  So while this is better (e.g., scrolling pages works smoothly now, same machine and OS as with the previous problem), and it's really not a major problem at this point, Jive can't be called efficient by any means. Software: the new tabs for Overview, All Content, Discussions, and Documents at first glace appear to be helpful ideas, but only with Discussions is there demarcation of read or non-read threads.  That forces a choice between that and convenience, where you can see everything together with the All Content tab (which otherwise would have been my choice, but doesn't show me where I've already visited). While it's not nice to rain on anyone's parade, I would NOT recommend following Dustin's advice, because of the lossiness and resultant poorer audio quality that the conversion will give you.  Worse still would be if the WMA originals are also in lossy-compressed mode (but WMA does have a very cool lossless option), then after conversion to mp3 you'll have two different kinds of losses munging up your audio. Well hey, actually you did really well without our help -- you didn't need us!  That took you less than an hour from your first post. Of course, why in the world your preferences got munged so easily, so recreating them by deleting the folder fixed the problem, well, that's a different matter.  You might have another commenter or two who may have something to offer on that, but overall, there's no clear trigger or the Adobe programmers would have already addressed it. Mitch, you are quite mistaken about that.  Audition 3 will save to whatever you last used, and there is no format default for sessions.  In fact, unless you're using wma lossless, saving session audio as wma could be disastrous because it adds noises and distortions typical of lossy codecs.  So stick with uncompressed wavs! So far as opening AA3 sessions, you can do that by saving the session as .xml from AA3, then opening that in AA4/CS5.5.  However, track effects are not ported. Hi, Avid.  Unfortunately Audition CS5.5 doesn't open Soundbooth documents, but in all fairness, no version of Audition ever has.  These programs have always worked nicely together installed side-by-side, so keep your newest version of Soundbooth on your system to retain that ability.  (I've even gone so far as to export tracks one at a time to separate waves for further editing and mixing in Audition, though Soundbooth does what it does well enough that normally I wouldn't try that.) There are many discussions here for what's been set aside for the time being to get Audition CS5.5 released for both Mac and PC.  If you're interested in the whats and the whys, please stroll through some of the recent large threads here. CD burning is not yet there, obviously.  Until a future update/upgrade, you'll need to save your audio to wave files and use other software, whether that be an earlier version of Audition, Nero, Roxio, CDRWIN, or whatever, to burn it to a disc. ... Ned, I take it you haven't been around here very long.  Your condescending (and blasphemous!) attitude towards us "whiners" appears to take nothing factual into account.  This forum continues to use the most inconvenient and awkward forum software I have ever encountered anywhere.  As one who particularly has been a part of Audition-related forums for nearly a decade, the idea of online "community" is a valued and helpful part of my fully professional work using this software.  When the forum software is inefficient or inconvenient, and useful data is dumped because forum managers can't figure out a way to preserve it, the community, usefulness, and enjoyability suffers.  So the reason for my ongoing whining is because a previously superior online experience is presently sub-par.  Of course, you're welcome to disagree, but perhaps you could do so politely, if you know how to do that. ... Wow. Already another month has slid by, and the total page views on this thread has passed 10K.  An impressive milestone. I don't want to be too negative or pessimistic here, but I'll make a confession: the romantic optimist in me had generated some sort of false hope that a thread like this would make a difference.  Sure, some of the basic limitations and errors of the initial release have been improved, for whatever reason.  So what?  The basic feel of this is still very kludgy.  How about a really massive improvement like NEW FORUM SOFTWARE THAT IS ACTUALLY SENSIBLE. Oh dear, I've resorted to yelling.  Forgive me.  At least we can still do that. So this false hope thing....  yeah, like 10K reads would generate such a groundswell of dissatisfaction, a chorus of dismay, that Adobe would kindly heed our cries and make a change. Well, not yet, anyway. That's not the only false hope.  Remember, this is a U-2-U forum, so there's no likelihood of any official Adobe comment, let alone any guarantee that an appropriate staffer would ever see it.  I guess I was also hoping someone would throw us a bone and raise our hopes.  If hope defies logic, is it still a good thing? Oh, believe me, Steve, I don't think this forum is actually good, or likable, but those tiny improvements I mentioned above were things that we'd all complained about.  Sort of like pulling weeds on the way to the poison ivy patch. No, it still doesn't keep me logged in when it's supposed to, nor does it correctly remember my Adobe ID because it puts up my email address instead of my ID name on the login page.  And this thing takes a long time to load a reply page on my state-of-the-art fancy wancy Dell computer.  Or load anything on this forum.  I won't rehash what this does to my old Pentium III, but it almost has to be seen to be believed.  AudioMasters remains next to instant. Hey, do you think we can actually push this to 10,000 views?  That would be something. Consider the dictionary definition of "Jive."  They're just living up to the name.  I wonder exactly how much stock Scott Adams has in this thing? Hey guys, it's been a couple of months, so a quick Hi, then back to Audiomasters. PC_Pete's letter to Adobe is just beyond lovely.  Enjoy at http://forums.adobe.com/thread/446892?tstart=0. I do see a couple of small improvements here: --file attachments now are "All file types are allowed except: .doc, .bin, .dms, .lha, .lzh, .exe, .class, .so, .dll," so I guess audio clips are now OK. --I don't have to log in everytime I try to post a reply.  Not that you should.  But "remember me" doesn't (didn't) work, so when I started lurking a short while ago, I wasn't logged in.  I did that when posting a reply to the PC_Pete letter, and it remembered me when I hit reply on this one. Small steps, sure, but they're steps.  It still cracks me up that Jive's feedback forum page, at the bottom, states: "Jive combines collaboration software, community software & social networking software into the leading SBS solution."  I don't know what an SBS solution is, but if this is the leading one, I hate to think of the trailing one.  Tis the destruction of community that has occurred. Still can't access this forum from home without interminable waits, and worse, eBay is now like that too.  I think there's a Java-script problem that doesn't have a proper instruction set for old Pentium-III computers.  So it just grinds to a halt.  And sorry, still not going out and getting a new computer.  It's approaching the level of need, but isn't there yet. Just in case anyone who cares and could do something about this stumbles this way, please note what the thread titled "[\Monk\main\common\PremiereShell\Src\PlayerFactory.cpp-379] " does to the formatting of the thread list -- pushing the "Views," "Replies," and "Last post" off to the side and even completely beyond the window. Before I resubmerge to resume the occasional lurk, I have to say that my first attempt at logging in today took so long that I could have opened all unread threads at AudioMasters, and possibly thrown a reply or two in, before the login screen appeared. Having not posted here for a month, I thought I'd come by and say hi and bye.  The only improvement I can perceive after all this time is that the default posts per forum page has been raised to 50.  I don't see any correction to any number of the other problems this software foists on us, nor, given the slow "progress," do I ever expect there will be.  This has to be the worst web programming I have ever seen -- it's a facelift on a rotting gargoyle.  I could care less that it looks nice; it's royally inconvenient to use, so I'm going to take my 134 posts (an insult -- we all are shorted about 4/5 of our posts) and leave.  See ya'll on AudioMasters. What's really tragic is that it looks like OzPeter has left too.  Now there's a real loss. Hey guys, this is not looking good for me here.  Bob, this loads somewhat slowly on my new work computer, but absolutely grinds my home computer to a halt.  I don't know what kind of programming is in use but it is demanding, to say the least. I had to go away and let my computer (an old P3 running XP and IE7) have time to load these pages.  This computer is not about to be replaced -- I just can't fork it out for better one right now -- and the fact that I can smoothly participate in all kinds of other forums on it, but not this one, is quite the shock.  The end result is that my presence here will be sharply curtailed.  Unless ya'll wanna take up a collection er somethin'.  Just sayin'. Interesting that having 7 tabs open at once consumes at least half of my CPU when I'm doing absolutely nothing.  Typing pegs it to 100.  Ridiculous. Steve, as always, thanks for your comments.  I can't understand the permanent loss of the FAQs.  Hopefully we're wrong.  Add to the disappointments the sluggish behemoth that the programming of these pages makes my computer. Nice that the place got a nice paint job, but for all the graphical advantages of this system, what really counts does seem to be lacking: threads viewed per page defaults to 30 regardless of what you set it to, and posts per page doesn't seem to be alterable beyond the paltry 15.  Tell me I'm wrong!  Makes speed reading take longer.  At least all replies show up sequentially regardless of where you hit the "reply" button. Now I know: if you create a thread or a reply to an existing thread, by default you are subscribed to email notifications unless you go into your profile preferences and disable it.  Personally, I find it very irritating to have that many emails, so the choice is obvious.  Interesting change of procedure without my input. Where is the sub-forum for older versions of Audition?  Is this the point that all previous versions of Audition and Cool Edit are jettisoned?  Maybe that can still be corrected too. ... View more

I came back to the office and find my email inbox full of notifications of all your replies.  I did not subscribe to this thread.  Well, I didn't intentionally subscribe.  We'll have to see about this one. I did notice the missing FAQ, but figured that's because all the links are broken.  Well, silly me, on second thought links weren't what made that forum work.  So major oopsie there. RE Eric S 1: My old login consisted of my screen name and Adobe store password.  That was refused for this forum.  We were warned of this some months ago, that the merge of forum and store logins was coming and to update our account accordingly.  After several attempts, I finally got in using my real name and Adobe store password, which then automatically connected me to my screen name identity. Remember, Audition is the one product Adobe refuses to promote for itself, so that's why there's no ability to upload mp3 or wave clips! While it's easy to point out the shortcomings of the transition, at least this launch, at this point a day early, isn't the unmitigated disaster of the last attempt to "upgrade."  So maybe there's hope for the problems at hand. ...
