Hi, I am in a class that is using the box technique to sight measure still life for proportional drawing. Someone gave an example of using this technique to draw the following picture: This person used the following boxes to guide the proportions of the drawing: Just looking at this makes me dizzy. But for the sake of trying to understand this process, I don't see a unicorn by just looking at the boxes. I tried to use free transform and adjusting opacity to make the boxes fit over the drawing so I could analyze the measuring technique, but I can't get them to fit over the drawing. Can someone help with this? The unicorn should fit in the boxes. Lastly, do you think this method is helpful for learning proportional drawing? This seems awfully tedious for what seems like a relatively simple sketch. But perhaps when tackling a much more complicated subject, this will be a valuable aid. What do you think??? Isn't there an easier way(not by tracing)? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I tried again following suggestion from jane-e, and named the layers. I couldn't find a way to view any settings on Find Edges/ All blending modes are Normal except for Linear burn, opacity is 100% and Fill is 100%. It seems closer to yours than the first image I uploaded, but outline is not as clear besides other differences. Thanks so much for going out of your way to help me!

I had no idea you could do this with Photoshop. I am not as familiar with the software as you obviously are, so I had issues with: 2. On the first use the Find Edges filter (where do I find this....I looked in the Filter drop down, didn't see it. I found the Graphic Pen, but don't know how to set "blend mode to multiply". How do I "set layer to linear burn"? Can you make it look like a grayscale oil painting as well? You are evidently a Photoshop wizard!

I need to see what a photo looks like when someone paints it. I am trying to learn hyper-realistic drawing. It could be in color or grayscale. I need to see something other than a ball or cube or cone in order to learn value, shading, etc. I am at the beginning of my art journey, and only sketched cartoon-like drawings. Hi, I would like to purchase an alternative to Cintiq, such as a graphic display tablet by Huion Kamvas. My laptop(Acer? I think) is seriously under powered for adobe software. I would like bluetooth, light weight, SSD, fast processor. I can't afford Apple as they are so out of my price range. What would you suggest I consider for the laptop....I don't care about brand, just performance. I usually buy on Amazon, but even a refurbished one on eBay or the manufacturer's website would be acceptable. Thanks in advance for your help!

This is a Wacom youtube video, where artist is demonstrating a Wacom product. I can't tell what kind of computer she is using....can you help? Hi, I am experimenting with using PS to aid in this math jungle. I was getting so frustrated trying to figure out something that would work that I just got the 12 x 9 inch paper, ticked off how high I wanted the puppy to be, and then compared measurements with my pencil(height, width, angles, etc.). But I think the method by ScooterD76 would really be very accurate. I could put dots on the x/y intersections for different points/landmarks, and then connect the dots. I don't like the grids, as there are too many. But the rulers I love.

Hi, I am a new art student, and I am learning traditional mediums. I use Photoshop and Illustrator to help me see values, print out images a certain size, all kinds of things. I am drawing the attached photo of a stuffed puppy and ball, in preparation for transfer to a physical canvas. The paper it is printed on is standard printer paper, 8.5 by 11. The paper I'm drawing(not tracing) is 9 by 12. I would like to enlarge the picture by a little. I drew a box around the entire image and it measures 5 inches tall by 6.5 inches wide(cyan box). This does not include the background. The only measurement technique we've learned is to draw boxes around each object. What technique(s) would you use to enlarge/do the math? This math thing is killing me. I saw a Youtube video where the artist put dots on strategic points and transfered them to a larger canvas, but I can't find it. Also, some people use a a centered vertical and horizontal line and increase proportionally. Is there a way to do this mathematically? Any techniques using PS or Illus are welcome. Thanks in advance.

I am a beginner trying to learn to paint traditionally, using PS to assist me. I traced an outline of a still life(see below) but it prints only 4 inches high. I only want to increase the size of the outline, not the background also. This is to help me with measurement, getting the proportions correct. How can I change just the outline to, say 8 inches in height? Do I free transform it....then what? I have the original snapshot of the angel statue, then the outline. The photo in the middle was an error, but I don't know how to delete it. Thanks in advance for all help/input. I appreciate any input, and thank you in advance.
