No, albums are not supported in the Local tab of LrDesktop. If you don't want to use the cloud, you would need to organize by folders, which is obviously less flexible.

1) No. Collections (and albums) are virtual containers only. They do not contain physical files, only catalog references to the actual individual files. Much like playlists. The advantage of this approach is that we can "add" the same image to multiple collections/albums without duplicating the image, but because they are virtual containers they only exist within the catalog.
So when you sync an image to the cloud, only one smart preview is uploaded no matter how many synced collections you may have added it to.
2) Because the collections are virtual, and the images they contain may be in other collections, it is a fact that deleting or unsyncing a synced collection (or album) does NOT delete or unsync the images that the collection/album contains. If you want to delete a synced image from the cloud you must either remove it from the "All Synced Photographs" special collection (which will automatically remove the image from any synced collection that it was in - because a synced collection cannot contain unsynced images), and will also automatically delete it from the cloud, or you must delete it from any cloud app (which will also remove it from the ASP in LrC as well as any synced collections/albums that it may have been in). One exception to that rule....if you remove an image from a synced collection you will get an option to also automatically remove it from the ASP but ONLY if the image is not in any other synced collection.

Jeffrey Friedl developed a plug-in for LrC which allows smart collections to be (sort of) synced: https://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies/smart-collection-sync
I tested it when it was being developed and it seemed to do the trick, and I know others have adopted it as part of their workflow. I think (but not certain) that @johnrellis also has a plugin for this purpose.

In LrC you can select multiple collections and then click the sync icon on one of the selected collections and it will be applied to all of them.
You could use the Lightroom Desktop app to move multiple selected albums into one or more folders in one go.

I currently see only 1 possible solution: I could create a collection from each of the 500 folders in the catalog and then synchronize these 500 collections.
Pro:
Folder structure on mobile devices is identical to the folder structure in LrC.
Cons:
Complex creation of 500 collections.
Changes in the folders in the catalog would not be automatically synchronized with the collections. I would have to delete the old collection and create a new collection when making certain changes to the folders, e.g. when I add new photos to a folder.
By @Peter35664653u66f
Assuming your folders in LrC are organised with one or more parent folders, you can have LrC automatically generate a collection set/collection hierarchy (which will include all the images in the folders). Simply right-click on a parent folder and choose "Create Collection Set...." from the menu and repeat for any other parent folders. Once the collection set/collections have been created you can then enable sync for each of the collections. Note that only the collections can be synced (into "albums" with the same name in the cloud), but collection sets do not so you would need to manually create the collection set (called "Folders") in the cloud.
In terms of the other "con", if you add new images to a folder in LrC you simply need the workflow discipline to add the same images to the corresponding synced collection. Eventually you may come to realise that there is no need to organise your images using folders in LrC, instead you could switch to using a date-based folder structure going forward and switch the organisational function to the collections.

(I choose "Export as" instead of "Save copy to device" because I need to put a watermark)
By @dtesic
I do see the same as you when using "Export as", but I'm confused when you say you are using this option instead of "Save copy to device" because you need to include a watermark. "Save copy to device" also allows you to include a watermark, see attached screenshot.

Even with this setting is ON, to save GEO location, when one uses the "Save copy to device", GEO location will be lost.
By @M_H3553
I just tested this on my iPhone, and the location data IS included when using "Save copy to device". Make sure that you have included the location data option in the export settings (and note that each of the various "Save/Export" options have their own settings menus which would have to be individually set).

I'd also add that if the files that you drag and drop into LrD from LrC have already been synced to the cloud (so are Smart Previews only), the drag and drop process won't get the LrC-added keywords into the cloud. Yes, the drag and drop process will update the Smart Preview to full original, but LrD does not appear to read the XMP metadata in that scenario, thus the keywords are not added.
To get the keywords into LrD the file in LrC must not be already synced.

The problem that I'm seeing now is an inconsistent result when using this drag and drop process.....in some of my tests the downloaded original replaced the existing original in LrC, which would be exactly what you want. But some other tests resulted in the downloaded original being added to the catalog, i.e. resulting in two copies of the same file in LrC, so NOT what you want.
In the second situation, I guess you could remove (and delete from disk) the original (unsynced) image, leaving the new downloaded original in its place. That can be messy, especially if the deleted copy had been added to multiple collections, and you'd have to be super careful when deleting files to make sure there was no mistake.

Hi,
Sorry I know this is an old post. I have done this. I have another drive A: for adobe. I have tried to install Adobe programmes to it after changing locations and uninstalling but it still installs to the c: drive. Can someone advise. I'm pretty tech savvy but this has stumped me. Do you create a file on the A: in my case.
Many thanks.
Lightroom Classic has a problem on Windows referencing the A: and B: drive letters (which historically were reserved for floppy disk drives). It wouldn't surprise me if that problem has also transferred to the Creative Cloud desktop app's installation process. You could try using a different drive letter.

I think I found a solution!! The latest version of Lightroom Classic doesn't sync keywords even once anymore, and I tried everything I could think of to work around this huge problem. After all, what is the use of having 50,000 images at your fingertips if you can't find what you're looking for? Try this: Open Lightroom Classic. Open LR on your desktop as well. Physically drag and drop images from Classic to LR. Voila! All your keywords will be there. No, they don't sync, but that's ok with me. Good luck!!
By @ScanVT
The problem with that approach is that when using "drag and drop" into LrDesktop you are actually doing an Import, which means that you are putting originals into the cloud rather than the Smart Previews which LrC adds to the cloud when syncing directly. Consequently, each image that you add by "drag and drop" (or by standard Import) is then using up cloud storage space, and if you do that with all 50K images you're likely to need over 1TB of cloud space.
Also, you would still need to save metadata to XMP in LrC before importing into LrD in order to get the LrC-added keywords into the cloud.
And one more complication: if the image that you drag and drop into LrD from LrC is not already synced as a Smart Preview, when the "import" into LrD is complete a copy of that newly-added original is then downloaded back into LrC where it will appear as a new image in whatever download folder you have specified. So that would be in addition to the original image in LrC.

If you are using the Lightroom Desktop app on your Mac, and you wish to "download" a copy of the edited original, you would need to use the export function and specify the "Original" option. This will create a copy of the original with settings included (either embedded in the header of the exported copy, or in the case of proprietary raw files they would be included in a sidecar XMP file).
I don't understand what you are trying to do when you say "nor can I drag them from the lightroom file within Classic". Could you clarify.
With reference to the final comment that you can't edit because the files are missing, can you provide some details about that? Specifically, what app are you using? Is the computer working in offline mode? A screenshot of the error message might give us a clue.

On Mac, by default any originals stoered locally will placed inside the Lightroom Library.lrlibrary package, which in turn will be within the user's Pictures library. It is possible, however, to change the location for these originals to a different location via the Lightroom Preferences>Cache tab. Note, that is for originals only, the location of the Lightroom Library cannot be changed.

No, I don't think that's possible as there is no "Read Metadata from File" option in any of the Lightroom apps, only Lightroom Classic has that option. It is possible using the Lightroom Desktop app to import a raw file which already has a corresponding XMP sidecar file containing metadata, and that metadata will be read and applied during the import. But that doesn't work when I tested using Lightroom Mobile on an iPhone 15, the XMP sidecar file is ignored. But if a raw file + XMP sidecar is converted to DNG (thus with the metadata embedded) and then imported into LrM, that metadata WILL be read and applied during the import.

AFAIK, the locally stored Smart Previews must always be stored within the Lightroom Library (which contains Lr Desktop's local "catalog"), and cannot be stored separately. The Lightroom Library is, by default, always stored on the local system drive and that location cannot be changed within Lightroom. Some users, however, have reported that it is possible to move the complete Library to an external drive using symbolic links, but I have no details on how to do that.

If that option on the Preferences>File Handling tab is enabled, LrC will automatically add a keyword to the enhanced DNG (not to the original file). There is a parent keyword (named "Enhanced) and then a lower level keyword specific to the type of enhance that you use, e.g. "Denoise" or "Super Resolution".

Which storage type is close to the limit: cloud storage or local disk storage?
If it's cloud storage that you are trying to deal with, you can use the "Archive" option in the Lightroom Desktop app (right-click on the folder and select the "Archive" option then follow the prompts). The archive option will save a copy of the originals to your local storage, then delete them from the cloud.

It should be there in the export settings dialog when you export an image. If you use either of the "Share" or "Save copy to device" export options, you need to adjust the settings first (tap on the settings icon to the right of the export option) and you'll get this screen:
Enable the "Include watermark" option and use the "Customize" button to set the watermark as you want it.

You need to understand that your existing "folder/subfolder" structure in Lightroom is not the same as a folder/subfolder structure in LrC. In Lightroom, it's a way of organising your existing albums into virtual containers and as such it would be the equivalent of a Collection Set hierarchy in LrC. It is unrelated to the physical storage of the images on local disk.
There is no easy way of migrating that virtual structure from Lightroom into a physical disk-based folder structure, you would be better advised to accept the dated folder structure and instead concentrate on syncing the existing album and folder structure into the equivalent Collection Set/Collection structure in LrC. The easiest way of doing that would be to enable syncing in a new empty LrC catalog (having first set the location for downloaded images and the optional date-based folder structure via the LrC Preferences>Lightroom Sync tab), which will then cause a copy of all the existing images in your cloud account to be downloaded into that new catalog, and placed into the equivalent collection/collection set organisation.

It used to work correctly, but hadn't checked for a while. So I checked again after seeing your post and initially there were no issues with LrWeb, LrDesktop and LrM on iPad.....but the notifications did NOT initially appear in LrM for iOS. I waited several days with nothing happening and was about to respond to you along those lines but made one final check first. And of course the notifications are now showing! No idea why it took so long. I tested again, and this time they appeared fairly soon after sending.
I guess that's not very helpful for you if you're still not getting them, but it does appear that the notification system is still working albeit not very reliably in terms of speed.

They might have originated from Lr Mobile on your phone or tablet. With only 2 dozen images to check, you can look at the info panel for each image which will tell you which camera took the picture, and when it was taken. There should be enough clues there to figure out the origin.
Also. if you click on All Photos in the Lightroom Desktop app, then click on the Filter Bar icon at the end of teh Search Bar, select the Sync Status option and that should reveal if the images are "Synced and Backed Up" (which would mean these are originals uploaded from one of the Lightroom app) or "Synced from Lightroom Classic" which would mean they are Smart Previews synced up from a (previous) Lightroom Classic catalog.

If you are using Lightroom Classic, change the "Destination" folder in the Import dialog to specify a folder on a different drive.
If using the Lightroom Desktop app, in Lightroom's Preferences>Cache tab, at the bottom it specifies the current "Storage location for originals".....use the adjacent "Browse" button to choose a different folder on a different drive. Once you have changed that location, Lightroom should move the stored originals from the current location to the new location.
