Go to your Composition menu, Preview and turn off Cache Frames when Idle. There is a bug if that is running when trying to interact with Camera Raw. There is a fix in 25.3 beta and will be fixed in 25.2 when that releases.

Thanks. So that looks like 4K comp resolution, potentially at 16 or 32bpc given the warnings I saw on some of the effects. Doing some quick math, that's about 2.8GBs of RAM needed per second. That doesn't factor into account any memory the plugins may holding onto, so that's likely why you're running out of memory, which is backed up by the Twixtor plugin change we tried earlier where you got through rendering 3x the frames. At this point, use the Beta where Preview from Disk Cache is available, or you'll need to work at a lower comp resolution or bit depth (do you really need more than 8 bpc for this)?

In the Memory & Performance preference is a Show Memory Usage button. The next time you hit the can't allocate error, go to that memory usage dialog and grab a screenshot of it and post it back here. Perhaps that can tell us a bit more about the state of things.

The 3-5 seconds might indicate an issue with the audio settings, or that it is taking that long to render a single frame to get preview started. Though if that's still happening after all the frames are green or blue, I'm not 100% sure what would be causing that delay.

Is your Beta build up to date? 25.2x122 is the latest. We introduced a new disk cache mechanic for playback which should better handle preview with low memory. I ask, since you're getting the 5 frame problem, and that sounds like an issue from before the changes went into Beta. Assuming you have the disk cache and the preview from disk preference enabled.

It could be the twixtor effect is holding on to memory and after 77 frames of that, it has exhausted the memory your system has available to it. It's very hard to know exactly what is going on. Are you able to share the project? Or turn off twixtor and see if that helps?

I can't tell if the memory requested is 132MB or if the . is a localized version of a , and so AE is actually trying to allocate 132GBs of RAM for a single frame. My suggestion would be look around frame 77 of your composition and see if there are any effects that might be creating really large frame sizes. If you have any effects on that frame, try turning them off to see if that helps.

I spent last evening trying to find the crash report but it doesn't appear it has come through to our backend.
Can you please recreate the crash and instead of sending it, click the View Report link in the crash dialog. That should open a folder containing a .dmp file. If you can put that somewhere I can download, that should help me understand the cause of the crash.

Do you have any custom import/export codecs installed on your machine? Perhaps check in the /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Plug-ins/7.0/MediaCore folder incase something else is trying to deal with the mov files.

Very likely you have a third-party import/export codec installed that is causing AE to crash on startup. Take a look at what you have installed in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\Plug-ins\7.0 and see if there are any plugins in there.

If you uncheck the auto-open checkbox, in the top toolbar area, that should stop it showing up. That said, I can't say I've heard of AE slowing down with the PP appears. Is it a particular layer type (like a really complex shape layer)?

A new option for pasting text from one text layer to another text layer is now available in AE Beta 25.2.0.117.
The Paste Text and Match Formatting menu option, available under the Edit menu as well as in the right-click menu when editing a text layer, will paste the copied text into a text layer using the font and style as set in the destination text layer. The existing Paste option will continue to paste text using the copied font and style.
From the Edit menu, choose Paste Text and Match Formatting when editing a text layer.
Right-Click in a text layer while editing and choose Paste Text and Match Formatting.
Please try it out and let us know how it works for you.

After more testing today, we think this may have been fixed for our next release of AE. If you're able, you can install the AE Beta from the Creative Cloud Desktop app. That has the fix in it that may have taken care of this. If you want to download and run the Beta to test, that would help us know if it is just us or if this is fixed for others as well.

I don't know enough about VM Ware or the VM Tools, that was just what I was seeing in the other posts I searched. Either way, the errors in the log file indicate an issue with the GPU Driver being used by the VM. It is not compatible with AE it seems.

Thanks - that log seems to indicate there is something not right about the VM's GPU driver and AE. Searching for vm3dgl64.dll leads to a few topics where other apps (3D ones from Autodesk) are also having issues with this driver (e.g. https://community.safe.com/authoring-6/fme-workbench-and-other-fme-form-software-broken-by-vmware-tools-35041) - rolling back to VMWare 12.4 is one suggestion as 12.5 seems to be the causing issue.

No, not really. AE does handle offline states normally just fine. It will likely help to get a log file from that machine leading up to the crash.
Navigate to the following folder
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\25.1\logs
Create an empty text file called "After Effects Log.txt" in that folder
Start AE and let it crash and close the various dialogs.
Take the content of the After Effects Log.txt and paste it back here so we can take a look (obscure any personal info in the log that you post here if that is of concern to you).

In the investigations we've done so far with other reports, we've seen the issues more often occur with expressions that are driving the character font or display. Is it possible to see in your comps if just hardcoding the text instead of expressions (again just as a test) makes the situation better?
