This is exactly the type of answer I was looking for, thank you! I thought it might be the case that I wasn't using the right tool for the job, (though in that case a lot of people on the internet making suggestions for this type of thing are also incorrectly using it...), and it being pretty outdated. But it wasn't clear to me what the width setting actually did, even if I wasn't using the tool correctly! That does explain why it occassionally works with some of the smaller images that I'm given too. So I super appreciate the indepth explaination! 🙂 You suggested to use the Select and Mask tool instead, but unfortunately none of the settings there have ever worked for this specific type of image. In this case, I'm being given images that are already transparent rather than having to do the cutting out myself, so I don't need to/shouldn't chop off any additional edge, plus there's often sharp angles in the parts that don't work well with the settings in there. So I'll probably keep up my current routine of that + healing brush tool on a darken layer, unless someone else has a better solution to get rid of a glow around the edges? That's probably a question for another thread though.

Yup, here's an example of the corner of one of the images, both the transparent image and one with a black background added for visibility. The top one is the original, the middle is with defringe at 1px, the bottom is defringe at 5px. The middle and bottom ones are exactly the same despite the change in settings.

I've noticed in my time of using the Defringe option, no matter what pixel width I choose, the result is exactly the same. I'm mostly working with CAD drawings that have been exported to PNGs when I try to use it, and for some reason the software the engineers use has a very slight "glow" on the edge of the parts in the images. I would think if this glow is about 3 pixels wide, that choosing 3 or 4 pixels when defringing would make the program get rid of those 3 pixels of glow, but instead it darkens it a bit but still leaves a glow. The exact same result happens if I choose only 1 pixel, I zoomed in completely on the border to compare and the result is not different at all. So what's up with this? Is this the case for everyone? Why is it like that? I would love to know how this tool even works, or how it's supposed to work, and why it doesn't ever work for me like I think it should.

Okay, I'm really curious as to how people would avoid having draft exports throughout the project. Unless you're only making a video purely for yourself, how do you share your progress with whoever you're making the video for? Genuine question. I get your point for people complaining about changes that other people wanted, but I don't think completely dismissing the people who are upset at the changes is the correct way to go about it, yet that's what Adobe frequently decides to do. Especially when it's taking away a feature that used to be present, like the current FX indicator colors issue. By trying to update it in a way that pleased some people, they took away an essential function for others, when they easily could have implimented it into the new design as well instead of discarding it, just giving an option to disable it if it needs to be for some people. In this case I don't really think "well other people do it differently" matters at all, because the easiest solution is to just add an additional option for people who work like the OP and I do. Plus, since it's different in After Effects, they really should have their two video programs work in the same way for something like that anyway, imo. No matter how different people use a program, there should be consistancy in things like that?

Ohkay, sorry I thought you completely missed the point, hah. I specifcally meant it was silly to assume I would want to save to the previous folder if I specifically have 'save to a specific folder' disabled, since it would seem to make a lot more sense to save next to the project file in that case rather than somewhere likely completely unrelated to the project. Though personally I can't imagine exporting everything to the same folder, it sounds like a mess when you're in the drafts phase, or working on multiple projects at once. XD

Okay, but if people are exporting all of their projects to the same folder like your example, they would use the "export to a single location" option, wouldn't they? I'm talking specifically about having that option turned off, and it still defaulting to the previous place instead, like the OP specified as well.

I'd like to second this, having it automatically default to the previous project's location is silly, if I'm working on a new project now, why would I want it to export to the old location?

I'm having a similar issue when I open the 'rename clip' dialogue box from the timeline, it jumps to the top of the transcription, which is very annoying when I'm trying to rename the clips based on the words spoke in it.

Have you tried resetting your preferences? My version of premiere never changed colors, I only get newer dark colors in the beta version, and even then the "classic" preset does look like the old colors still. (Cerulean at it's default does have white text though, which has absolutely awful contrast.) (if this image appears, beta with "classic colors" on top, current release bottom.) If you aren't able to get the colors restored by resetting preferences, I can copy/paste the hex codes in my preferences from the classic pallete and see if that works for you to manually change them? 😮

I'm having the same issue! Non-Library SVGs work just fine, and the ones from the library still show up okay where they're placed in past documents... But CC Library SVGs say "This item is not supported in InDesign" when I hover over them. Hopefully they fix this soon!

I'm encountering this too, I thought maybe editing the caption preset file itself would work to fix it but unfortunately not. Changing or removing the "NumLines" part of the file doesn't do anything, it just resets it back to 1 when the preset is imported. I can't seem to find where the imported presets are saved so I can't try testing straight from there, if that's even possible. This is rather frustrating as the point of presets is to not have to click extra buttons each time!

The funny thing is I had this in the 'using the community' form first but it got moved for some reason? XD I really don't want the account deleted, but even if I did, I cannot log into it to send you a PM because it's on the same email address/Adobe ID as this account, and when I log in it just logs me into this one. Did everyone's account get handled like this? Or is it just me that had this messup happen to them? Because if this was how it was handled with everyone's uservoice accounts, this feels like a major oversight...

@kglad Thank you for the resources! I'll try to use those links to get ahold of Adobe when I get some extra time later today. Part of my problem is I don't really want the newer account deleted as all of my comments from uservoice got added to the new threads via that account, and I'd like those to stay in tact rather than disappear (unless deleting an account doesn't remove the comments...)

It seems when Uservoice was converted over to the forums, it moved my account over instead of merging it with my existing account? Is there any way for me to even log into this other account rather than the one I'm currently on? I keep getting notifications for it but can't do anything with the account itself... https://community.adobe.com/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/28080475 https://community.adobe.com/t5/user/viewprofilepage/user-id/17764993

@Todd_Morgan Account settings > following > checkbox > unfollow Theoretically that should work at least, I'm getting double notifications for this thread so they may have messed something up with transferring things from uservoice? ALSO the settings seem to not update right away, I set it to only send one email a day and it's very much not doing that lol.

Can we please get "(FIXED)" removed from the title of this thread? It's very obvious this issue is not fixed and it's rather misleading for it be marked as such. A workaround that involves turning off a feature is NOT a fix by the way.

I am also still running into this problem, on version 23.4.2. My workaround is to use the option on the history panel to create a new document from the current state, the new document works fine, but this is still rather annoying as I lose any history when doing this.

I've created an idea thread about this as recommended by @BrettN, though I focused more around re-adding the old version of the function as a new non-legacy option rather than adding the transparency capabilities to actual Index PNGs, since that is all I need. I did mention that though, and said that I believe both should be available, but that they should go ahead and readd the existing function to export settings too. https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-ideas/restore-old-png-8-export-transparency-function-as-a-new-option/idi-p/13004208#M14838

As per the discussion that's been happening in this thread: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-bugs/p-export-as-8-bit-png-issue/idc-p/13002438/load-autosave/true/page/3#form_c36e47d7456db4 PNG-8 exporting in Photoshop used to produce a smaller file sized image with alpha transparency. With one of the past few Photoshop updates, this option was changed to no longer support alpha transparency, as appearently this was a bug and the files were not saving as intended. However the ability to export a smaller PNG file with semi-transparency is pretty much vital to web design these days, as webpages become more dynamic and responsive, so the change to this function is disruptive to other people's and my own workflow. In my world I don't specifically need an Indexed PNG, just a PNG with a smaller file size and semi-transparency. If I wanted an Index image with no alpha transparency, I would just export a GIF, making the corrected version of the PNG-8 option pretty redundant. This option is still technically accessable by choosing 'Use Legacy "Export As"' in Preferences > Export, but all legacy options are eventually phased out and I believe this function should be restored as an export option somewhere. Here are my suggestions: Just readd the old function somewhere in the export screens, exactly as it worked before, but don't label it as being 'PNG-8' or Indexed at all so the name is accurate. Add the ability for Photoshop to save Indexed PNGs with alpha transparency. This is something the PNG format does support, but Photoshop itself does not, as said in the thread linked above. The second option is definitely the more complicated one to add, so personally I just want the first option to be available, and not get phased out as a legacy option. I'm sure the second would be useful to some people so it should be considered, but in the mean time I think the old option at least should be changed from being a legacy setting to an additional setting in the current export window.

@BrettN Thank you for all of your explaination here! I absolutely agree that the name of the option is confusing, especially when it has been working differently than intended for such a long time and has now changed, without people knowing there was anything wrong in the first place. The option saying "Indexed Color" rather than "8-bit" would probably help, as it's more clear to someone with not as much knowledge that indexed color doesn't support the semi-transparent pixels, or at least that's something that I was aware of. This is where I was looking that got me confused about the 8 bit depth supporting alpha transparency, for the record: https://www.w3.org/TR/PNG/#11IHDR I did try out the "Generator" option, even though it's a bug that may also be patched out, but unfortunately this will not work for me as it cuts out all blank transparent space in the canvas around the layer, if I have a 40x100 image centered on a 40x200 canvas, it will still export as 40x100. This option also created the same size of images as the Legacy Export As option did, so I will just keep Legacy on for now and hope you never remove the option! (About Photoshop never supporting exporting smaller file PNGs with semi-transparency; that's rather inaccurate considering it has been doing so up until this bug was fixed. 😛 It just never has on purpose, which seems to be a big oversight considering how vital smaller files with semi-transparency are for people working with web design. For me the "Smaller File" part of the option is much more important than the "8-Bit" part of the option, because in my case, I don't need to care how the files are being generated in a way that's smaller, as long as they look fine. I'm sure many people, including the person who started this thread, are in the same boat. Even though the option was not working as intended, it still was producing a valuable outcome by reducing the file size dramatically for semi-transparent images, important for the people using it for the combination of alpha transparency + small file sizes, which is now unattainable without the Legacy settings enabled. I feel like it should be considered to be added as an actual option for this reason.)

@BrettN That's great that you fixed it, but I never had any problem before with smaller 8-bit files being created, they were always smaller than the PNG-24 option and therefore there was no issue. So to some people, rather than fixing anything, you just changed the way it worked where it now works worse than it did before, creating low quality images that are actually larger than the PNG-8s being made with legacy options enabled. I just did several tests and every time the new PNG-8 export was larger than the legacy one, 248 vs 238 kb, 7.5 vs 6.5 kb, etc, with the smaller numbers being the result of using legacy export. It's great that the legacy option is there for us to use, but what about when you phase it out, are we just stuck never being able to export a smaller PNG with partial transparency? The fact that your PNG-8 system now doesn't support the partial transparency is ridiculous considering that's one of the main features of PNGs. If you look at the W3 standard for PNGs, 8 bit supports alpha transparency, so there's no real argument on why to exclude it. (You also mention not choosing the 8 bit option if we do not like how it looks now, but for web developers that simply is not an alternative that can be done. The file size difference in a 24 bit photo to an 8 bit photo is dramatic, and files used on websites need to be as small as possible without sacrificing too much quality, which is now impossible on PNGs with your current system only exporting 8 bit images with jagged edges and no partial transparency.) Is there really no way you can come to a middle ground, and either fix it again so that the PNGs actually have one of their basic functionalities, or give us an option in the new export as dialouge to chose if there's partial transparency in it or not? PNG-8 could be a separate option from 'smaller' PNG-8 for example, if the jagged-edged no partial transparency data option is truely smaller.

I heavily agree that this is how it should work. I'm having the same issue but with a layer under the layers I'm trying to alt+drag. The shapes I'm dealing with are rather small, so instead of selecting the layer I need it to select, it instead will grab the background and duplicate it instead quite often, which is very annoying.

I have updated to the newest version of Photoshop (actually uninstalled and reinstalled the newest) and this issue is still happening for me. Someone else on this thread mentioned turning off the Graphics Processor in the preferences, and this works most of the time to let me open photos in the program, BUT I literally cannot close the program even with that turned off. I have to go into the task manager and force the program to close because hitting the X in the corner tells me it can't due to a program error. By the way, the last couple of people that commented here were already on 22.4.1, so you should probably go back and reread their messages. I'm not sure how to get all of the information on their messages, but I'm on Windows 10 Pro and here's some info: Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9850H CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.59 GHz Graphics Card: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630 & NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 Installed RAM: 32GB

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to suggest another non-adobe program on this forum, but GIMP may have what you're looking for here, it has a 'colour to alpha' setting that you can use to set a certain colour to be transparent, in this instance the black. This worked pretty well for me when I needed it to get rid of the background of a picture with some welding sparks. (If adobe has a problem with my non-adobe suggestion, they can just add this feature to photoshop too!)
