Images that are imported into Lightroom and then exported (even in the same format and same color space with lossless or no compression) always go through a 8-bit to 16-bit (or 32-bit) back to 8-bit round trip process. The last step, from 16-bit back to 8-bit, involves adding dither (very small random perturbations) to avoid visible quantization issues such as banding. For most cases, this is the desired process because it improves quality. However, for the use case that you describe, it will result in some changes in the numerical values, because of this step.

Oliver, my understanding is that neither S23 nor Pixel 6a support Ultra HDR.
Cheers,

We've shipped A1 support for a long time, so making any changes now in the underlying base exposure adjustment would break rendering compatibility for all existing A1 users' images in Lightroom.
If you prefer to start with a darker image, you can customize your Raw Defaults with an Exposure value of -0.15 (or whatever).

You have a misunderstanding of how the point curve works in SDR/HDR. Curves are never "converted" between SDR and HDR. It's the same curve. In SDR, the point curve has values from 0 to 255. In HDR, it's the same curve, but you now have values from 0 to 500. The new range for HDR is 256 to 500 and corresponds from SDR white to +4 stops above SDR white. This is all intentional and by design.
Curves optimized for SDR (e.g., big rolloff in highlights) will probably look bad for HDR. And curves optimized for HDR (e.g., extended highlights) will probably look bad for SDR. This is normal and expected. It is also why the HDR button is available at the top of the Edit/Develop stack: it's meant to be used first or early in the workflow, before the use of curves or other features that depend on the SDR/HDR state. If you start with Curves or other controls and then toggle HDR button, you will likely need to revisit those adjustments.

The following is a draft of the updated DNG Converter command line documentation that we'll post on the official site before too long. Not all the options are available yet (esp. -lossyMosaicJXL and -losslessJXL), but the other JPEG XL related compression settings do work. There are many examples that I've added to the docs for typical use cases. For example, for high quality lossy, try: -dng1.7 -lossy -jxl_effort 7 -jxl_distance 0.1 [input file]
As an example for a source non-DNG Bayer file that is lossless compressed using the native format.
Original: 45 MB
Convert to DNG (lossless JPEG, prior to 1.7): 38 MB
Convert to DNG (lossy JPEG XL, effort 7, distance 0.1): 16.4 MB
Convert to DNG (lossy JPEG XL, effort 7, distance 0.2): 9.9 MB
Convert to DNG (lossy JPEG XL, effort 7, distance 0.3): 7.2 MB

Hello, can you describe a bit more how you tested the sample photos in Google Photos, in terms of the mechanics?
For instance, did you download the photos on a Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro, add the photos to Google Photos (on the phone), and view them on the device?
Or, did you upload to Google Photos via a web browser?
Or some other method?

Understood. We're going to have some more options in the next release of Camera Raw that will enable you to achieve better quality, with lossy.
The current lossy compression DNG settings available in ACR 16.0 were intended with Smart Preview (proxy) workflows in mind; that is, as a temporary stand-in for the original..
Stay tuned for some improvements in this area.

Thanks for explaining that. In general I would always recommend using Super Resolution on the original (in this case, NEF) data. This is for two reasons. First, Super Resolution works best on raw (mosaic) data, such as the Bayer mosaic data in a NEF (Super Res applies both demosaicing and upsampling at the same time, for a better result). Second, Super Resolution will generally amplify any lossy compression artifacts (esp. in RGB data).
Note that in ACR 16, if you apply Super Res on your NEF, the result DNG will be quite a bit smaller than when you previously used ACR 15.x, because the result will be compressed using the new method (JPEG XL).
In other words, this flow should produce the best output (with good file size):
NEF -> Super Resolution (demosaic + upsampling) -> result is compressed DNG
Whereas the following flow will also produce small files but will compromise the quality and hence not recommended:
NEF -> Lossy Compressed DNG (demosaiced linear RGB image) -> Super Resolution (upsampling only) -> result is compressed DNG

Is your original file a raw file or something else?

We have identified the problem with the "crushed shadows" symptom for HDR Output on Windows, affecting some devices. This should be fixed in our next release, coming out soon. Thanks for reporting this.

We are probably not going to refer to the standard by name (ISO 22028-5) within the product itself, because the name wouldn't be particularly meaningful to most photographers. However, the Camera Raw HDR Output Technology Preview does support HDR still images in the ISO 22028-5 format (open, edit, and save) in the AVIF, JPEG XL, PNG, PSD, and TIFF formats. The final version of the feature will, too. Hope this helps!

There are some known color rendering problems with the existing color profiles when in HDR mode. The main issue is that these profiles generally use 3D lookup tables which were originally designed for SDR content; ACR 15.2 uses an overly simplistic method to extend them for use in HDR mode, which is not working well as you've shown in your examples. There are other colors which currently do not work at all in HDR mode (e.g., Color Grading, where overrange values are unaffected but should be). This will be improved in the next release.

Yes, I was just going to ask you to post your Save dialog settings to check for that issue. Sorry about that.
We recently posted a 15.1.1 build that fixes this issue:

(These will also be available via the standard Adobe CC app installer shortly after the new year.)

Yes, we will eventually also release the installer natively via the normal Creative Cloud app.
In the meantime, please try the one I linked to earlier. The installer needs Rosetta, but the ACR 15.1.1 plug-in is Universal and therefore contains native Apple silicon code.

Yes, output sharpening + HDR + GPU mode is currently broken during Export. Sorry about that. We're working on a fix. In the meantime, please either turn of output sharpening, or set Preferences / Performance / Use Graphics Processor to Custom and uncheck the "Use GPU for Open and Save" box

In HDR mode, you can still achieve highlight desaturation if desired by using Masking. The easiest way to do this is to create a Luminance Range Mask for the highlights (best to use the Target Adjust Tool) and then tweak Saturation to taste.

The colors in the areas you indicate (typically the neon lights) are problematic because they are clipped in the raw data. For example, around the C&A sign, the letters C and A have both the green and blue channels clipped. For The warm-colored ellipse around it, those lights in the red channel, or in some cases clipped in both the red and green. Because of these partially-clipped colors, it is undefined/unknown what the "true" color is.
They will appear different in the SDR and HDR modes, because the SDR mode tries to push near-white colors towards the gray axis (neutral) to ensure a smooth transition towards white. In HDR mode, we don't do this, because there is no predefined upper limit for white. Thus, the HDR mode version is closer to what was actually recorded in the file.

We've confirmed the issue is related to Output Sharpening when GPU is enabled in HDR mode. We're working on a fix.
In the meantime, the workarounds are (a) disable "Use GPU for image processing" in Preferences/performance, as you already identified, or (b) disable Output Sharpening.
Thanks for your help & patience.

Yes, Lr Classic 10.2 should fix this issue. To the best of my knowledge, the bug affected a specific range of AMD GPUs (which many of our customers have). If you were experiencing the system freezes / crashes / forced reboots in Lr Classic 10.1.x please update to 10.2. (Plus, 10.2 is a lot faster in Library in general, due to several performance optimizations done by the team. So, I recommend 10.2 for multiple reasons.)
If you update to 10.2 and are still encountering system freezes, please report back and we'll work through diagnostics. Thanks.
