Hey guys! I have a 2013 Macbook pro that I am using for premiere and animate. My computer is quite dated so whenever I edit 4k footage or try to animate in 4k I experience major lag or crashing. That being said, I'm looking for a new computer. I've been with Mac for some time now but I'm not sure if I should switch to building my own PC or get the latest IMac. I'm also unsure of what computer specs are needed to seamlessly work with 4k footage and animation files that wouldn't be an overkill. Please give me some opinions, spec recommendations! I'm a newb and need your brain juices.

What I built last month... YMMV due to the volitility of the component market
I don't know why (I will guess that plants closing due to Covid) but the
computer component market is really a mess... by the time I was ready to
order, I sometimes had to switch either suppliers or what I bought - the
final price, not including shipping and taxes, was $1,889

I will put the M.2 in the 'lower' M2_1 spot so it won't be near the GTX 1650
Just in case I ever decide to replace the 500Gig with a longer 1Terabyte M.2

This ram is 3200MHz vs 32Gig of 1866MHz ram of my old computer or 1.71 times as fast

I had purchased the different brand that I planned, I would have needed this

To disable onboard video (if it does not auto-disable when use a card)
Go to your device manager (see above about making a 'God Mode' link)

Modular so I will only install the power cables I need to reduce clutter inside the case
https://www.newegg.com/tools/power-supply-calculator/ - not counting case fans 500 watt
A power supply should not be run at capacity, so I decided on 850 watt 'Gold"

To get the ASUS motherboard to boot from the M.2 drive I had to go into BIOS and change...
Change CSM from disabled to enabled
Change Boot from Storage from Legacy to UEFI
Change Boot from PCI-E from Legacy to UEFI

A PC can be configured so many ways depending on your needs. Are you editing BRAW or Pro Res? Those codecs create large files. Mechanical hard drives in a RAID away would be your best bet for storage. I am not sure how big your animation files will be. Are you editing H.264/265? If so the new Intel CPUs with Quick Sync would be your best bet for encoding and decoding the odd variations of H.264/265. Below is a video that might be worth watching.

generally, premiere requires more computer resources than animate so i'm going to move your message.

When I was buying components I wanted an RTX2060 with 6Gig to be sure of smooth timeline playback
I had to buy a GTX1650 with 4Gig because nobody had the 2060 in stock at that time
My 4k test did not have any timeline 'glitches' so I didn't need the 2060
I will not buy a 4k camera, but I did want to test my new computer with some 4k video
I downloaded some sample files from https://4ksamples.tumblr.com/
I have the HEIF and HEVC codecs... I didn't install them, so I presume they came with Win10
H.264 and HEVC inside an MP4 wrapper work... HEVC inside an ENCM wrapper won't play or load
Anyway, the MP4 files work just fine on the timeline, I don't notice any playback delays
or artifacts... so my computer with GTX1650 with 4Gig works just fine with 4k video
