Laptop faster than my desktop?

Lately I have just been a slow down on my Desktop computer, which is equipped with an i7-5820K, GTX 1080, 32GB RAM, and many SSD's.

Though my Laptop has an i7-7700HQ, 16GB RAM, and a GTX 1060. But when editing in either Premiere Pro, or After Effects, it feels that

If doing things such as scrubbing on the timeline, doing renders on the timeline, and just previewing footage feels faster, and smoother

From my Laptop, and I am unsure why?

I know that my Laptop has a newer generation processor, which I get, but I don't think that would make much of a difference when compared to

My Desktop. However, the only HUGE difference between my Desktop and Laptop is that my Laptop has a 250 GB PCIe SSD has the boot drive,

and my Desktop just has an 850 Evo, however the Media is always being previewed from an External Hard Drive, or another internal 850 Evo.

Lately I have tried doing everything that I could possibly think of to try and speed up the performance of my Desktop, which would be hard to list all of the

Various things, such as changing different settings, reinstalling, and various windows configurations as well.

But, if there is something else I could try, or if it is really time for that processor upgrade to a new generation, please let me know.

Go to the Hardware forum for this type of help. Don't have the link on my phone but it is there on the right side of the Overview page of this forum.

It's probably Windows. You may need a clean install on your desktop.

Whenever that time comes (every couple of years) I retire the current boot drive, purchase a new drive and start there. Thus I don't change the current system drive, and I can always boot from that again. (especially if I'm missing some files, or need to check some settings, etc) Depending on what hardware that current drive is, I may reuse it eventually as a secondary drive, or put it back in that computer when I move that machine down my usage line.

The funny thing is recently I already did a clean install of Windows on a brand new 850 EVO, and that's why I don't understand what is going on. The SSD isn't even 6 months old.

All of this leads me to strongly suggest you post in the hardware forum, and also go to the Tweakers page, I think now ppbm8.com.

Download and follow the instructions for the test he has. It's a short but intelligently designed project file with media, sequence and effects structured to rag out CPU, GPU, RAM, drives and connections in real-time work.

Also included are a couple logging apps. It takes a half hour or so to set everything up, installing the logging apps, and running the export that is getting logged. Upload the data of the logging apps.

And then you will know exactly where your computer is working well, and where it isn't while running PrPro. Compared to thousands of other tests with similar to different hardware.

No guessing, no asking 20 'experts', just cold hard data.
