I have bought into this photography thing hook, line and sinker. Can you believe this?
I went out and bought a new laptop that would fit into my new camera bag. How sick is that?
The bag maker said that it could hold a laptop with a 15.3" screen. Unfortunately laptops have 15.6" screens. Even the 14" screens would not fit because the pocket, while wide enough, is not deep enough.
Oh well, now I have Windows 8 to play with, and a touch screen to boot. So I guess I need to try writing touch apps since the Adobe software for that comes with the Creative Cloud.

I gave up thinking that I was smarter than the device, with my first Nikon F4 - the F2... well I eventually won that contest, but then came the F4 (into my system).

I know.. you're right.. I have to read this stupid manul for basic stuff. But I did exactly what you said.. just started pushing buttons, put lenses on, took pics ( no clue how to see them yet ), put sd card in, unwrapped all the " stuff " and looked at it... on my cofee table...and curled up on couch in fetal position and moaned cause friend of mine just got to be a dead duck, she was only 54 years old....and then played with buttons some more.. the zeiss looks good, as does the nikkor.. but I have NO CLUE how to play it back...
Will read the manual as you said...
I won't be much smarter but you guys will help me out with this digital stuff.
I put all my mamyiya stuff away and got tons of room for this stuff now.
I just have to figure out the menu stuff I guess.
Plus I miss Mary a lot. This is her last show..but it's about 20 years old now... she did way more than this
I loved her even though it was 30 years ago.

I dont wanna put her art "down" but you should know that I sat in the barbed wire chair naked one night... just to put thing in perspective for you and the rest of the forum...
Very slowly and gently lowered myself into that mass of wire... with a lot of BEER THIRTY !
Boy, I miss her.

Rodney,
Almost sounds like the second verse (some versions) of Halleluja (Leonard Cohen):
"Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah... "

candles were nice...
geez, Bill, how can you remember verses like THAT ? You must have photographic memory.
I spent yesterday ( 3-4 hours about ) going through manual along with camera in lap to go through stuff. I'm about maybe half way to figuring out how to use this thing. Some things I'm just going to blow off until I need to know about it.. like some of the more esoteric things I'll maybe never ever use. One annoying thing is that if you're not fast enough to do stuff the screen(s) sorta go off... like to save battery. So I have to read stuff pretty fast, figure out little symbols mean what, and make choices etc... instead of taking my time. And some symbols are so small you have to be superman with super vision to see what they are.

Once I thought there was a small ant stuck on my screen and it turned out to be a little lightning bolt, which I have no clue what it means. " take cover ! " ?? " lightning about to strike, look out ! " ??

There is likely a Menu setting to give you a longer display time, but on the new Nikons, I am not sure which screen, out of about 8000 pages of screens, you will find it. You will want to commit all 8000 menu pages to memory, if you ever hope to even take a photograph in any of the 2000 Automatic Modes. If you want to do anything manually, that is another 8000 pages of menus. Now, don't even think about any of the Program Modes - you don't want to know how many menu pages are in those. Just wait until you add the clip-on Nikon strobe for that camera. It has about 30000 pages of menus. When I got my SB-25 (or whatever it was), there was a large crate shipped with the box containing the strobe. I had no idea what was in it, but Fed-X had to use a forklift to get it to my garage. When I pried open the crate, I thought I had been accidently shipped the complete set of Encyclopedia Britannica, but it was just the manual for the strobe (in only one language)... all 36 leatherbound volumes. At least I was able to cut a hole in the side of the crate, flip it over, and it was a perfect doghouse for two fat Bulldogs. They had room to run, play, and sleep comfortably in it.
That "lightening bolt" is probably indicating that the pop-up flash will be needed, in the selected shooting mode, and will pop-up and put your eye out (think Red Rider BB Gun there), unless you have the new, updated firmware, with the meteorological function in the GPS, and then it indicates a Severe Thunderstorm approaching... be careful if you see the littl "tornado" symbol ! ![]()
Enjoy, as we'll probably not be hearing much from you, as you pour over the new "toy."

too funny ! And pretty accurate ! I would have done more than 4-5 hours of studying the manual but even lying down in bed with reading lights and camera on lap it was hard to press 2 buttons at the same time to do some stuff...so decided it's time to put it on the tripod and figure out the rest..
Then there's the upcoming "menu" system which I haven't even looked at yet. Everything so far is doing stuff on the camera body with various buttons and knobs and wheels..haha...I even have a master control wheel and a secondary control wheel !
Remember when you could turn on light meter (TTL ), turn shutter and f stop to match the little needle, and set iso to film stock...and just shoot ??? Wow, this is a whole new world !
Is now snowing like crazy... maybe will try a shot of snow...see what happens...????
be right back !

Sorry to hear about your friend.
As for the manual, I downloaded the manuals for my GH3 whil waiting for it to arrivce so I would be ready. Then I watched all of the online reviews so I could see how other people did things.
What I discovered was that I didn't care at all about any of the fancy little programs modes and I just wanted to know how to do everything manually. If I could set how wide I wanted the aperture, how long I wanted the shutter to stay open, and how to change the ISO (which I try to avoid), then all I needed from the camera was an opinion on how the exposure was going to look. There is a meter for that.
I then needed to see how to look at the photos (to chimp them) and I would be good to go.
Everything else could wait until I wanted to expand my horizons.
Now, if I could just figure out how to get a deep enough DOF to get everything into focus. I am getting the body of the bird OK but the darn tail is out of focus. I narrow the aperture to around 20 and I am shooting something pretty far away but the DOF is still so narrow i is driving me crazy. I spend to hours shooting yesterday and not a single keeper out of 1000 shots as far as I can tell.

I hear more complaints about too great a DOF with digital, even with a wide aperture. Lots of folk use ND filters, and low ISO, just to shoot wide open, to cut down the DOF. A good friend, who makes a ton of $ with his wildlife work shoots his birds with a Canon 300mm or 400mm, and tries to get to about f/2.8. His primary focus is the head/face, and actually wants much of the body to go out of focus, unless he's shooting hummers, and then he has a couple of strobes set up to get the wings sharp too. He'll be here next week, and I'll get a shot, or two, of his rig, which he sets up over our bird feeder, also close to our honeysuckle plants for the hummers.
I spent two hours shooting yesterday and not a single keeper out of 1000 shots as far as I can tell.
Though it can be a bummer, at least you have the real "beauty" of digital - no film, or processing costs, and a simple Reformat, or Delete cleans the CF card for the next day's shooting.
I still think that Rod needs to commit the entire manual to memory... ![]()

UG !
well, this is just great... heh...
I put the sd card in the reader and it said " this card is not formatted do you want to format " and I said no...and decided to install the CD that came with the camera. Some kinda ViewNX program...
When it was finished installing it put an icon on desktop. when clicked it says " program could not start cause it can't find MFC100u.dll....
So then I got to folder with that c++ visual studio runtime exe and I can't get it to install...
grrrr.. so now I'm dead in the water and looking for solution. using XP, got the right newest file for the runtime ( x86 ).

UG Again...
no joy with the runtime installation ( and mfc dll file )...have done extensive investigation etc. Probably needs a fresh install of OS to get it done, and it aint worth it with XP...cause I need to upgrade to 64 bit anyway to really do stuff with camera...
Sooo, time for new computer. Will do move first and then computer with cs6.
I'll keep this one around for some of the other programs packed into it.
Damn... might as well get some beers...

oh oh...things are getting worse...
using msconfig I tried using some instructions to disable various services to get to the root of my problem with the c++ runtime thing installing.. and now I have a message saying my version of windows is not activated ...

I think I'm about one snake whisker away from losing the mouse entirely and a re-format etc. Which would mean losing TONS of stuff ( documentary research etc ), not to mention all my normal stuff ( banking, passwords and so on ) OMG !
I have a few more tricks up my sleeve to find a restore point maybe. So far the only one showing is the one today that messed me up. Yikes.
I don't even know my own email passwords and stuff.. OMG ! HELPPPPP !

Do you have an external drive with lots of free space?
If not, get one now and dump everything to a full backup.
It's better to lose track of where things are than to lose them altogether.
Good luck.

ps.. yeah, I got a graid I can use ... 1 T... should cover the basics of stuff maybe... how do I back it up ?? no clue. it's ntfs same as internal drives...
edit... ps..
I doubt I can install any more programs now though.. my msi installer stuff aint working right at all.
I'll put the links from browser ( documentary sources ) onto a dvd and my docs and stuff like that.. and call it quits with this machine I think.. do fresh OS install at some point and maybe get some of the programs back on ( ms office, quark, maya, stuff like that.. )
thanks though.. you're right.. gotta take a step back cause now Im lost and just making it worse moving on with crazy solutions to the runtime stuff.. just to get a stupid nikon program installed.. geez..

I think this mouse is a dead mouse soon.. I'll never revert to this thing again .. too much junk on it ( which caused the problem to begin with probably ). I will do all the docs and links and stuff , and email stuff ... tomorrow... I'm beat now.. spent hours trying to get this thing to work and it just got WORSE ! LOL... yikes ! Thanks for that path though.. it is what I would back up. In a more perfect world.
I can't even find the original disk that had OS on it when I bought computer, due to moving from ny etc. Plus I'm sure it was like sp1 instead of sp3 ? I have no patience for this anymore... all the upgrades and stuff.. soon as you buy product you gotta get fixes and updates.. grrrrr. I'm just gonna relax now for a few. Maybe I'll think about trout ranch hell, which makes my own situation look like a bright sunny day in comparison.
hehe...

old stuff ( painted images ) with welded steel frames ( rough and rusty etc afterward, the frames ). He did tools and old stuff as content , was pretty nice. I'll try to find a link...
http://www.okharris.com/current/press13p.htm

He lives upstate ny or somewhere, maybe around woodstock, and is a scenic in movie biz..
has family and cant make living on painting alone ( fine art ) ...which is common...so anyway I bought one of this series...BEEP BEEP !

Is your XP installation an OEM disk?
(Original Equipment Manufacturer)
For example a Dell or HP branded OS installation?
If so, you might be able to get a new one from them.
If it was a stand-alone Microsoft XP install disk,
you could be SOL.
