Hook, Line and Sinker

People's Champ ,
Apr 04, 2013 Apr 04, 2013

I have bought into this photography thing hook, line and sinker. Can you believe this?

I went out and bought a new laptop that would fit into my new camera bag. How sick is that?

The bag maker said that it could hold a laptop with a 15.3" screen. Unfortunately laptops have 15.6" screens. Even the 14" screens would not fit because the pocket, while wide enough, is not deep enough.

Oh well, now I have Windows 8 to play with, and a touch screen to boot. So I guess I need to try writing touch apps since the Adobe software for that comes with the Creative Cloud.

hiya Joe

Yeah, Mary did some nice stuff. That one show doesnt have a lot of other stuff she did.

Guess what ? I just tried calling the phone number again to activate xp and this time I got through to them and I activated it..

It was a OEM for dell computer. So I'm all set ...

This computers pretty old and the card reader thing that came installed in the box is starting to act wanky. It works to read my olympus 32 gig card okay most of the time. It wont read my nikon 64gig xtreme card. So I ordered a card reader from B&h yesterday good for sd and sdhc and so on.. and maybe I can plug that directly into a usb port in back that doesnt go through a hub... and see if it works...

Trouble is...I cant get the nikon program ( viewnx 2 ) to load the c++ runtime part of program so the program doesnt work ( keep getting msg I'm missing the mfc100u.dll file ). Do you think I'll be able to read the nikon formatted card without the nikon program and drivers etc loaded ??   I have no clue but it seems to me it should be a standard fat32 or ntfs or something format right ??

Does it require 64bit OS?

Probably, but not based on direct experience.

no, it has both x86 and x64 versions...

Guess I'll find out in a few days when I get card reader..give it a shot. Can always use with new computer too, so if it doesnt work is no big deal. Is very annoying though not being able to play with camera more by putting in some files...

Then again, I have about 6000 pages of manual to read still... so no big deal...

woulda been nice to test out the shotgun mic in cs3 just to see sound levels etc..in the mov files...stuff like that.

Usually where the camera's utility program comes into play will be with the exact CODEC used for AV files. I do not know what format/CODEC your Nikon uses, but if it's MJPEG, then it is probably tweaked by Nikon. With stills cameras, that also shoot motion, and with the MJPEG CODEC, that exact MJPEG CODEC can be important. The generic MJPEG CODEC's, like Morgan, or MainConcept may, or may not work perfectly, where the camera mfgr's. version WILL work perfectly.

If the Nikon uses a more mainstream CODEC, then it will probably not be necessary to have the Nikon utility installed.

Another consideration is if you shoot Camera RAW. IIRC, you have Photoshop CS 3. It has an ACR (Adobe Camera RAW) module, BUT the last version of ACR, that worked with PS CS 3 will not support your new Nikon. For that support, you will need the latest ACR module, which will ONLY work with Lightroom 4, or PS CS 6.

The two workarounds are to download and install Adobe DNG Converter, and use that, or use the Nikon utility to process the NEF files (Nikon's Camera RAW). Or, upgrade to PS CS 6, and install the latest ACR module from Adobe.

I do not know what all ships with the latest Nikons, but back when the N90s was a current model, one got a "starter version" of Nikon Capture, that was inexpensively upgraded to the full Nikon Capture. One neat feature with it was a computer controlled intervelometer, to run the camera via USB cable, for Time-Lapse work. Back then, one DID have to be a bit careful with the ACR modules for PS, as Nikon Capture would install the Nikon version into PS, if it found that program. One had to then go into two places in the folder structure for PS, and replace the Nikon ACR modules - unfortunately, they had the same name, so one had to look at dates/times and file sizes, to make sure that they got the correct ACR modules. Once done, if one did not reinstall Nikon Capture, all was cool, as both Nikon Capture and PS's ACR modules could be updated, with no conflict.

Good luck,

Hunt

Joe, yes, has usb but that automatically starts the nikon program to get stuff from camera...it's also probably used for firmware updates ? I didn't want to fool with the usb thing yet ..with the program not working.

Bill , you have xp right ?? do you have mfc100u.dll you can send me in email. It's in windows/system32 if you got it. I doubt it will work for me with all the dependencies but is worth a try. I do have the c++ redistributable for 2005 and 2008... it's this 2010 that's not loading right...can't hurt ... I can always delete it if it does nothing. I can use cmd line to register it I think..( registry ).

I just did all sorts of more investigating .. some of which is related to .net framework install problems similar to mine. I think I might have some root certificates messed up that is giving the generic fault error...

Thanks, Bill, about the info on latest arc stuff. I think this either normal jpg or raw for me.. and I just shot some stuff using jpg. But the mov h264 should open ok in cs3 if I can get it off the stupid card.. LOL... what a mess !

I think the card reader is one prob, the nikon prob is separate prob, and then the other probs will have to stand in line...

How cool !!!!

I did a test.. I took the card out of olympus ( slower and smaller gig size than the extreme 64gig cards I got for Nikon ) and stuck it into the nikon and formatted it. And took some pics .... And then stuck it in built in computer card reader ( which wasn't seeing the nikon faster card )... and discovered 2 things..

1) it left the olympus stuff on the card when it formatted a folder for the nikon !  How cool !

2) The card reader sees it fine ( so the new card reader coming from b&h should fix the problem with the nikon card speed I hope ).

However, when I put card back into olympus and formatted, it erased the Nikon folder too..which is kinda interesting.

The pics seem to be fairly close to the real color. I have it set on sRGB now, but have choice of adobe RGB too... any suggestions ??  I haven't tried the adobe color yet...I just wanted to get something into the computer ( jpg ).. to prove to myself I got a camera !

Good ol Cougar... still running !

cougar1.jpg

good ol trees...

trees1.jpg

yipee !

focus looks wanky though.. hmmm...maybe when its expanded...will look better...

It now smells a little like the foothills of CO. out of Denver now .. the air... sorta damp snowy smell with trees and that clean smell... like around that town Evergreen....

============

As cards get faster, I have found that I needed to upgrade my card readers.

============

Ya, I hope that's the problem... will know in a few days. This dell computer is pretty darn old now and the built in reader stuff is probably like something you'd find in the excavation at Pompei ( sp? ) or that Bloomburg building foundation in London..

Thanks so much for all your help !!!!!  It was driving me nuts not being able to test if I was actually GETTING any pictures outta the camera... you, know, and then the computer crapping out on me trying to use msconfig to fix problem with installing program... I was bummed !

Now I'm very happy ! I'm sure the mov thing will work out fine...and I got your notes on the db level thats good for normal range... ( can set that with camera ).... and test shotgun.. even though I'm gonna get a different shotgun for the interviews.. with boom pole ... this one mounts on top of camera on flash acc thing...

OHHHH , thats another thing I gotta test... my strobes !!!!  I may be finally moving along here !!!!

When wife got new Panny Lumix, and I bought the fastest SD cards for it, I found that NONE of my card readers worked with those - the built-in ones in laptop, the ones built-into several All-in-One printers, the USB stand-alone (about 4 years old now), so I just updated the stand-alone, and all worked perfectly.

My first stand-alone was something like a 4-in-1 reader, then the next was like 8-in-1, now 16-in-1. Also, they get cheaper and cheaper with each version, starting at about US $50, and now US $15 for more, and faster cards.

Good luck,

Hunt

Thanks !  I was thinking from reading about stuff online that it might be the problem so ordered card reader... will know soon. Meantime at least I got something from the slower card from the olympus. Thank God, as I was starting to get kinda bummed out.

Put dll into system32 and program opened but with mssg ( unexpected error, restart viewnx 2) but got a open screen now...see below

opened.jpg

, so maybe I have some functionality now despite error mssg.. will test it out ...I wish I knew the dependencies and could then just place the files I need where they have to go... but that's a huge pain to deal with... will probably just do tests now with SD card and after move get new computer and cs6..

You have no idea how happy I am to finally have this camera now.. and that it's working...where I can get anything out of it... I am doing the snoopy dance !

Taking a break from drinking beer by the pool to remind you that if you are posting your pictures on the web you want sRGB. Remember that photo I kept working on until it looked decent online? The one with the detail in the belt and the decent contrast. It was sRGB that made a huge difference.

I keep telling myself that one day I will stop wasting space and shoot RAW only. However, I keep finding reasons to shoot RAW and also store JPG. It makes it easier to look at on my cell phone.

This is one of my "keepers" I think.

hmmm, I know there are web safe colors and that is something to choose in ps when working with websites etc... but I wonder what the real diff is for shooting both stills and movies using either srgb or adobe rgb.. I bet adobe rgb is more for 'print' and the movie stuff wouldn't matter much cause it would go thru it's own color space stuff ( rec 709 etc ) anyway. Anyone know for a fact ? is adobe rgb more for print for still photos ??

Anywho, I'll do some searching on that soon too Steve.

And, HAPPY BEER THIRTY ! hehe... That's a fantastic pic of the bird... it's jonathan livingsting seagull !!!  My hero !  ( some of his cousins got ugly sometimes on the long island sound while I was sailing but they were misled and crazed.. that's another story )

Nice shot. was that on AF ?

I just did a real fast pan with my first mov test... and I love the tones and color basically ... if I stop frames and look... it's nice....I am soooo happy so far with this camera !  I'll post it even though it has no 'quality' .. just testing if the darn thing works or not...

IT IS WORKING !

Now I can test a few more things and then get into you helping me get into the more finesse type things you've been dealing with since you got your camera !

Sorry about that. We are sharing the new laptop on vacation and I didn't know she had logged me out.

It is kind of funny that I specifically bought ND filters to get a narrower DOF in the bright sunshine and can't seem to get the DOF deep enough to keep a whole bird in a shot.

On the other hand, I am OK as long as I don't try to fill the frame with the bird. The shot above shows a bird that took up a vry small section of the frame.

Oh well. I think I am going to take some texture shots of rocks in water and sand on the beach. I also have some statues I need to get shots of. A couple of them are going to be a challenge. They are huge and it is quite dark in there. I think a shutter on bulb (or just the longest setting less than that) and some flashes from my cell phone, or using the flashlight app.... Painting with light I think they call it.  We'll see.

crank up the iso a stop or 2 and you'll have that bird in focus throughout..cause for every time you double the iso you add a stop to your exposure.

Sooo, if that shot was at iso 200 and F8 at shutter speed 1/250 sec...

Crank up iso to 800.... which is 2x, and you get an F 22 ( standard stops are like f8,16,22 ).

So another words you add more speed to the sensitivity of the sensor, and stop DOWN in direct proportion do the doubling and so on... know what I mean ?

So iso 200 at f8 and 1/250 is the exact same thing as

iso 400 at f16 at 1/250 sec....

or is the exact same thing as iso 800 at f 22, and 1/250 sec... so you increase you DOF that way....

cool ??

edit.. but you know I sorta like it not being totally in focus throughout anyway.. I think its a nice shot the way it is...

gives it more 'depth' to have a little out of focus...

I get what you mean but I hate touching the ISO for fear of noise.

I have been shooting everything with ISO 200 - the native ISO for my camera. Changing to 400 or higher when needed in dark situations. But changing just to get a better focus freaks me out a bit.

Oh, I will try it. It just makes me queasy.

I just thought that on a bright, sunny day, the problem would be getting a nice bokeh, not getting a nice focus. Seems odd to me.

And I still need to figure out where the shots are too soft due to being at the ragged edges of my f stop settings. I heard this was possible, but I have not successfully tested it yet. And should I limit my 100-300 to 120-280 to avoid being at either end? Could that be an issue with a medium priced lens?

for now dont worry about where your F stops are at to get the most out of your lens in terms of quality. Use all your F stops. That's why they are there.

on a bright day or even a bright overcast day you're not going to get 'noise' in dark areas ...cause it's all pretty much up there in light... in other words, you're not raising you iso to shoot in dark areas... so that's not an issue.

All you're doing is raising your iso to give you another stop or 2 for your depth of field, which really has NOTHING to do with your 'focus'.... they are 2 different things.

You know that.. you just have to DO IT...raise the iso if you want to stop DOWN...even in bright sunlight.. and see what you get. You'll like it !

All that stuff about losing quality of your lens cause you are stopped down to the max, or opened up to the max on your iris ( f stop ) is not for you to worry about at this time.. use them all.

edit.. 'makes me quesey ".. funny ... that's NOTHING ... wait till LATER ON ...you'll find out whats REALLY SCARY !

( sorry...I'm making jokes )

=======

nope.. use what you got ... get the shot.. worry about that other crazy stuff later. People make a big deal out of nitpicky things.. trust me.. .use the lenses... they are your friends.. and the iso etc... do it... film speeds for the past 20 years have been up around 1000 iso for motion pic stuff... dont worry about this stuff.. just get the shots by using what you got.

I gotta add here.. since we're yappin about it..

Lets say for some reason YOU DID get a little more 'noise' on a bright day by going to iso 800 so you could shoot long lens at F22 ( for your DOF ).. who's to say that noise won't actually make it look nicer ? With film it was called " grain "... so it's the same thing really.. It might actually look really COOL !

Rats...

I have to charge up the batteries ( got 3 ) to continue going through menus and stuff, to keep learning about camera controls etc... I put the head back on my tripod and put camera on it this morning so I could sit near it mounted and go through stuff without holding it.. which was way better than holding it. It's surprisingly fairly well balanced even with the 70-200 zoom on it..not too front heavy.

Mouse computer is squeeking happily ... thank goodness. Thanks again Bill for that file too. At least program opens for some functions. Haven't tried the capture thing yet or raw ( nef ) but after I figure out camera settings so I can work it pretty fast I'll get into more shot tests etc.

This is really fun ... I know that sounds stupid , but it's my first digital SLR camera.

So far everything is working out OK though.. in terms of being able to adjust stuff and so on...

I hate to think the camera is smarter than me but thank goodness I can always fall back on that if I continue to make really horrible pictures on my own...hehe..

Don't even begin to think think that way. I refuse to get off of manual. Oh, occasionally for a particular shot, perhaps, but I refuse to let the camera make the decisions very often.

Be patient and take lots of photos. Some will begin to come out. Mine have. Not a lot. But some.

And sometimes, even with all the power and capabilities of the expensive cameras, well, sometimes they are just snapshots.
